Maple River loses to Oakes

Oakes scored the first eleven points of the game and built on twelve point lead in the first quarter on the way to a 62-35 win over Maple River in boys basketball in Oakes.

Roddek Schmit made two free throws a little over a minute into the game to start the scoring run. Ediberto Garza cut through the lane and scored the final basket in the run giving the Tornadoes a 11-0 lead with 4:44 to go in the quarter.

Tee Sylling got the Raiders on the scoreboard when he putback his own miss with 4:11 to go making it 11-2. The biggest lead in quarter came when Trey Skoglund converted a three-point play with 1:13 to go in the quarter making it 18-6 Oakes.

The lead grew to 17 points in the second quarter as the Tornadoes started the quarter on an 8-2 run. Skoglund’s two free throws made it 2811 Oakes with 4:42 to go in the quarter.

That would be the largest lead for the Tornadoes until late in the third quarter.

The two teams alternated baskets for the first five minutes of the quarter with the lead staying between eleven and 15 points. Oakes would go on a 10-0 run in a span of 1:10 to take a 50-29 lead. Oakes’ Jyles Meier scored on a putback as the horn sounded making the score 52-31 Tornadoes heading into the fourth quarter.

After a basket by Connor Dahl twelve seconds into the fourth, Garza would score six straight points for Oakes giving them a 58-33 lead. Carter Baasch scored in transition for Maple River with two minutes to go in the fourth to make it 58-35. Those were the last points of the game for the Raiders.

Baasch led Maple River with 14 points. Tee Sylling score eight points and had a team high ten rebounds. Blake Theurer scored seven points, Connor Dahl had four and Preston Dows scored two points for Maple River.
