VCSU defeats DWU in 5 innings, loses to MSUM 6-0

MINOT – The Valley City State softball team split Saturday's games at the Minot State Dome, including a 17-2 rout over Dakota Wesleyan in 5 innings.

The Vikings mustered 15 hits and six doubles in the big win Saturday. VCSU then fell to MSUMoorhea­d, 6-0. VCSU is now 1-2 on the season.

Kennadi Stone garnered 5 hits on the day while Logan Gronberg totaled 4, including three doubles and five RBIs.

VCSU plays four games at the University of Jamestown Dome next weekend. The Vikings will face Jamestown and Northern State on Friday, and then Mayville State and Northern State on Saturday.

VCSU 17, DWU 2 (5 innings) The Vikings wasted no time getting on the board in the first game of the day, scoring in the top of the first inning on Gronberg's RBI double, scoring Makenzee Stone. DWU responded with a home run from Peyton Bagley in the bottom half of the inning. VCSU then exploded for 10 runs in the third, including RBI doubles from Sierra Crocker and Makenzee Stone.

Kennadi Stone kicked off a 6-run fifth inning with an RBI double and Gronberg finished off scoring with a 2-run double, scoring Lauren O'Loughlin and Alyssa DePoorter.

Dakota Wesleyan managed to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough, ending the game by mercy rule after 5 innings.

VCSU's Gronberg went 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles, two runs scored and five RBIs. Kennadi Stone went 3-for-4, scored a run and drove in two, while Makenzee Stone doubled, scored three runs and drove in two. Sierra Crocker and Maddy Zander tallied two hits and scored two runs each.

Zander got the win in the circle after tossing 3 complete innings. She allowed just one run on three hits while walking three and striking out five. Rhyan Sigmeth pitched 2 innings and allowed one run on one hit, walked three and struck out four.

MSUM 6, VCSU 0 VCSU's bats cooled off in the second game of the day as the team mustered four hits against three MSUM pitchers.

Kennadi Stone singled twice, and Zander and DePoorter each singled once in the game. Gronberg drew a walk and DePoorter was hit by a pitch but the Vikings could not find a run.

Moorhead posted a pair of runs in the first inning on singles up the middle from Olivia Goderis and Sam Centeno. A sac fly added another Dragon run in the fifth and MSUM sealed the win with three more, including a solo home run from Evey Evans, in the seventh.

MSUM's Evans went 3-for-4 at the plate including a solo home run in the seventh inning. Azalya Lopez added two hits, and Centeno drove in a pair of runs.

Joelle Lamontagne got the loss for the Vikings after starting in the circle and working 6 complete innings. She allowed six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out one. Zander pitched an inning in relief and allowed just one hit and added one strikeout.

Moorhead's Lopez picked up the win after allowing just two hits in 4 innings of work. She walked one and struck out two. Avery Steffen pitched 2 innings without giving up a single hit and struck out three, and Evans allowed 2 hits in 1 inning of work.
