Haidyn Crockett and Northern Cass came to Valley City and spoiled Senior Night for the HiLiner girls basketball team.

Crockett scored 28 points in the game and led the Jaguars to a 6049 win over Valley City, keeping the Hi-Liners from clinching the top seed in next week’s Region 1 tournament.

The first quarter was back and forth, with neither team taking control of the game. After ties at 4-4 and 6-6, Dacota Potratz gave the Valley City the lead at 9-6 when she banked in a threepointer with 3:40 to go in the first quarter.

The Hi-Liners biggest lead in the first quarter came when Drew Potratz hit a three-pointer off the inbounds to make it 12-8 Valley City with 2:53 to go in the first quarter. They would have that four point lead twice more at 13-9 and 15-11. The Hi-Liners would lead 17-16 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Valley City scored the first five points of the quarter to take a six point lead. Drew Potratz banked in a three-pointer from the same spot her sister did to give the Hi-Liners a 22-16 lead with 6:32 to go in the first half.

Josie Jensen hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with 6:16 to go in the quarter, which started an 11-0 run by the Jaguars. Crockett then hit a three-pointer in front of the Hi-Liner bench to give Northern Cass its first lead since they lead 2-1 two minutes into the game. Crockett capped the 11-0 run with a free throw that made it 27-22 with 4:03 to go in the second quarter.

Free throws by Drew

Potratz and Maddy Anderson cut the lead to two at 27-25 with 2:57 to go in the second quarter. Tesa Olson would tie the game at 29 with a turnaround left hand jumper in the lane with 2:16 to go in the quarter. The Hi-Liners, however, were not able to get the lead back.

Crockett would convert a three point play with 1:03 to go in the quarter to give Northern Cass the lead back at 3229. A lead they would not lose. They led 3631 at halftime. Crockett scored eleven points on the quarter, six came during the 11-0 run.

In the third quarter, Northern Cass would open up a twelve point lead, midway through the quarter. Tesa Olson’s baseline jumper made it 38-33 Northern Cass with 6:39 to go in the quarter. The Jaguars then went on a 8-1 run, started by Crockett with a 17 foot jumper just beyond the free throw line, then ended by Addy Rust with a runner in the lane with 4:17 to go in the third.

Valley City’s first field goal in 4:20 came on Kailee Nielson’s turnaround jumper in the lane with 2:19 to go, cutting the lead back to ten, 46-36. Drew Potratz up and under layup in the lane got down to eight at 46-38 with 1:27 to go. But that would be as close as the Hi-Liners would get the rest of the game. A free throw and basket by Addy Winterquist would give Northern Cass a 49-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The biggest lead of the game came when Ellie Lucas hit a midrange jumper with 6:39 to go and then a free throw with 6:16 to play to make it 55-40.

Everytime it looked like the Hi-Liners were poised to make a run, the Jaguars would respond. Free throws by Olson and Dacota Potratz and a steal and layup by Potratz cut the lead back to ten, 55-45 with 2:58 to go in the quarter. But a three-pointer by Crockett with 2:17 to go would push the lead back to 5845.

When the horn sounded the Jaguars avenged the twenty point loss to the Hi-Liners at Northern Cass and all but shut down the Valley City hopes of getting the top seed in the region tournament.

Seniors Drew Potratz and Tesa Olson led the Hi-Liners scoring. Potratz had 14 points and Olson had eleven. Senior Hadley Thoreson scored two points but had a team high five rebounds. Dacota Potratz had nine points, Katie Burchill had six, Maddy Anderson scored three while Kailee Nielson and Greta Goven had two each.

The Hi-Liners, finish the season 15-6 and 9-3 in Region 1 play.

The Region 1 tournament begins on Monday, February 19th at Scheel’s Center in the Sanford Health Athletic Complex on the campus of North Dakota State University.

The Hi-Liner junior varsity got balanced scoring and picked up a 42-39 win over Northern Cass. Maddy Anderson led the way with ten points. Katie Burchill and Kinlee Sufficool had eight points each. Kadiem Kocka, Rylyn Johnson and Kailee Nielson all had four points and Nora Pederson had two.
