“I am the light of the world”

One of my favorite ways to spend the morning is watching the sunrise. The birds greet you with a morning song as the first glimmer of light waves at you in the distant line of the horizon. Contrary to normal food, this appetizer makes one even more hungry for the main course. The stillness of the morning leaves a quiet yet palpable excitement in its wake as more and more of the sky is illuminated. Finally, after patiently waiting, the sun takes its rightful place in the sky.

One fascinating discovery was made less than five hundred years by a man named Nicolaus Copernicus. Before his time, it was believed that the sun revolved around the Earth. Copernicus discovered that the Earth revolves around the sun. Although it may appear as if the sun rises and falls in the sky above us, in reality, we are rotating on the earth So that the sun comes into our view. This revolutionary belief caused great trouble for Copernicus. now, nearly 500 years later, this belief has been proven to be true.

At times in my life, It can feel, like the sun, that God rises and falls out of my life. It can seem like an event I am excited to see when it arrives, but am left dark and without direction when it leaves. The reason it can feel this way is when I believe that God revolves around my life. Reality proves something different.

Notice the characteristics of the sun: it is blindingly bright, It provides direction and clarity, It affects everything it touches, It will burn you get too close, and it is what the earth revolves around. In the same way, sinful humans in the presence of a holy God would die, he is blindingly bright, and he affects everything he touches.

Jesus says in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Just as the earth revolves around the sun, so we are to orient our lives around God. We can find this direction in our Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE). when we do this, he will provide clarity and direction to our lives.
