1920s Reimagined at L.A.’S Hotel Figueroa

- KATHY A. MCDONALD

What’s old is new, updated and chic again at downtown Los Angeles’ 268-room Hotel Figueroa. The landmark 14-story edifice, built in 1926, is steps from Staples Center, the Microsoft Theater and the Los Angeles Convention Center and well positioned for the dining and after-parties surrounding E3, the Emmys and pro sports events. “We incorporated as much of the original charm as possible and modernized it so that it works for today’s hotel guests,” explains Adam Goldstein of design firm Studio Collective, the team behind the Spanish revival-style hotel’s multiyear makeover. Wrought-iron chandeliers, original art and custom-made furniture of leather, stone and wood fill the brightened lobby and bar, which features restored vintage skylights. Casey Lane of Venice’s the Tasting Kitchen developed the menus. The lobby bar and Breva restaurant are up and running, with Bar Alta and the pool bar and restaurant Veranda to open soon.
