Tennessee squads sweep Georgia in All-Star Basketball Classic

- By Scott Herpst

The numbers were against the Georgia basketball all-stars last Tuesday night, in more ways than one.

Only five players suited up for the Peach State in the girls’ game, while the Team Georgia had just seven players in uniform for the boys’ game.

Not surprisingly, the scores reflected that as the Tennessee squads rolled to easy wins in the annual Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Basketball Classic at Chattanooga’s Notre Dame High School.

The night’s opening game saw the Volunteer State girls dominate and win 102-43, the biggest victory in the 14-year history of the series (double check), while the Tennessee boys began pulling away in the second quarter to score a 97-73 win.

The 10-member strong Tennessee girls jumped out to leads of 9-0 and 18-2 and never looked back in the rout.

Signal Mountain’s Aryn Sanders took home Tennessee Player of the Game honors with 22 points, while Jesse Walls (Rhea County) added 23. MiKayla Williams (Grundy County) had 11 as all 10 players scored for Tennessee, who took a 9-4 lead in the overall series.

Destiny Irvin (Ridgeland) and Rebekah Hammond (Armuchee) scored 16 and 15, respectively, for Team Georgia.

Taylor Boggess (Meigs County) won the girls’ 3-point shootout.

The Tennessee girls have won six in a row in the series.

Marion County’s Matt Harveston was voted as the Tennes- see Player of the Game in the boys’ game. He scored 10 of his 13 points in the second quarter, which saw Team Tennessee turn a 21-19 lead into a 19point cushion at the break.

Bradley McCurdy (Bradley Central) had 13 points and a teamhigh seven rebounds, while Malik McConnell (Red Bank) added 12 points. Adrian Thomas (McCallie), Terron Hayes (Chatt. Central) and Tyler Byrd (Notre Dame) scored 11 each.

Georgia was led by the Model High School duo of Dwight Hall and Brian Griffin, who scored 16 points each. Tanner Storey (Dalton) scored 10, while Hall was named the Georgia Player of the Game.

Ryan Montgomery (Chatt. Central) outdueled Byrd for the slam dunk contest win, while Hunter Erickson (Heritage) beat McCurdy, 15-14, to win the boys’ 3-point shootout.

Tennessee’s boys now leads the all-time series, 9-4.
