LaFayette Presbyterian concert to feature local artists
LaFayette Presbyterian Church, 107 N. Main Street, will host a free community concert Sunday, June 19, at 4 p.m. A reception to meet the artists will be held following. Performers will be musicians from the LaFayette area, and include James Boyle, Julie Mavity-Hudson and Avonne Waddell, daughter of Pastor Ken Waddell.
Boyle, who plays keyboard, is a native of LaFayette and a graduate of LaFayette High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in music education from UTC and his masters in choral conducting from the University of South Florida. He returned to the Chattanooga area after teaching public school music in Tampa, Fla., for 30 years. He was the organist at Northside Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga for seven years and frequently plays for weddings and events. His passion is the pipe organ.
Mavity-Hudson, also a graduate of LaFayette High School, plays a variety of wind instruments as well as string instruments and performs in Nashville, Tenn., with several symphonic and traditional music groups. Her passions are interesting musical instruments of different types and jam sessions with her three musical sisters Erika, Celeste and Cleta.
Selections will include classical pieces from a variety of composers, sacred songs and light classical tunes. Boyle and Mavity-Hudson have performed together for many years and will delight the audience with their musical versatility.
Avonne Waddell grew up in Calhoun, Ga., graduated from Calhoun High School, has successfully completed her senior voice recital at Young Harris College, under professor Karen Calloway, and is majoring in music education. She studied voice and excelled in top choral groups at M.C. Taylor School with Viola Davis, in Interlochen, Mich., and the Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Ga., for five years with Kimberly Cone. She is employed as the voice teacher at the Gold Rush School of Music in Blairsville, Ga. Waddell will share several vocal solos from her recent recital.
