First-ever Freedom Fest Run set for July 4

Runners are encouraged to wear their red, white and blue for the inaugural Freedom Fest Run on Monday, July 4.

The Freedom Fest Run is a 5K (3.1-mile) run/walk with a onemile family Fun Run/ Walk through downtown LaFayette. Both routes will begin and end at Joe Stock Memorial Park, site of the historic antebellum Marsh House mansion.

At race headquarte­rs you will be able to grab an American Flag or other 4th of July gear while you check your results, listen to music, and enjoy the race site festivitie­s.

Spectators are encouraged to wear their best patriotic attire as they cheer on the athletes.

The 5K and onemile Fun Run are on a USATF certified course. Registrati­on and the start/finish line will also be at Joe Stock Memorial Park, as well as restrooms, a first aid station, refreshmen­ts, music, and more.

There will be designated parking areas at Food City, LaFayette First Baptist and LaFayette Academy.

Runners will be able to pick up race packets at the park on Sunday, July 3 from 4-8 p.m. Gates will open at 6 a.m. on the day of the race and packets can be picked up until 7:45 that morning.

Registrati­on will close 15 minutes prior to the start of each race.

The national anthem will be performed at 7:55 with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. The onemile walk will start five minutes later and the awards ceremony will begin at 9:30 or when the final runner finishes.

Awards will be presented to the overall first place winners, in the male and female divisions, as well as the overall winners in the Masters Division.
