COMMUNITY · Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special program at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center Saturday, July 9, exploring the roles of civilians, quartermasters and other support staff in preparing the armies to fight at Chickamauga. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to informally interact with living historians, while formal, 45-minute programs will be at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. From September, 18-20, 1863, thousands of soldiers fought in the fields and forests along the banks of West Chickamauga Creek. Behind and alongside those soldiers were thousands of wagon drivers, teamsters, clerks, quartermasters and civilians working to ensure soldiers had the food, clothing and supplies they needed to fight. Join us for this special program where visitors can “meet” some of these unsung heroes who served “in the rear, with the gear.” For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, please contact the Lookout Mountain Visitor Center at 423-821-7786, the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706-866-9241, or visit the park’s website at nps. gov/chch.
