Sybil Bandy Moseley, 85 LaFayette

Sybil C. Bandy Moseley, of LaFayette, died in Eugene, Ore., Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015. She was 85.

Her children, Mary Elizabeth TaylorHinman of Portland, Ore., and Marshall Lee Moseley of Cave Creek, Ariz., were with her as she fought bravely for five days in the hospital. Her beloved great-grandchild, Sierra Vaquera, contributed greatly to her care. Melissa Moseley of Eugene, Ore., her cherished second daughter, died six weeks prior from a short battle with cancer.

Mrs. Moseley was born July 22, 1929, to Fitchel Lee Sr. and Mary Hittie (Adcock) Bandy in LaFayette, Ga. For the first years of her life she lived with Fitchel’s parents, Fletcher and Margaret (Pierce) Bandy. Two years later her brother, Fitchel Lee (Lee Bandy), was born in 1931.

Sybil was a blond child with olive-colored eyes, a beautiful face and a sweet personality. The family lived in their house at 409 McLemore Street and even during the depression, there was always food and they were well cared for.

After attending grade school she went on to LaFayette High School, graduating in 1948. Sybil graduated high school at age 16 and earned a scholarship to Erlanger Hospital Nursing School. Hard work and perseverance paid off and she became a nurse in 1953.

While working in a doctor’s office in Chattanooga, Tenn., she met her future husband, Wynn G. Moseley, a reporter for the Chattanooga Times Free Press, from Ky. They married in 1954, eventually moving to Westchester County, N.Y. for Wynn’s journalism career in New York City.

She worked part time as a surgical nurse for Westchester Co. Hospital in N.Y., often leaving in the middle of the night to assist with emergency surgery. Sybil was a wonderful mother who made homecooked meals, was a Girl Scout leader for many years, supported the interests of her children, helped with homework and was loving and firm while raising her children.

The family visited LaFayette every summer and enjoyed being in close contact with her mother, Mary Hittie Bandy “Mamaw” and her brother, Lee Bandy and his family, including wife, Charlene Mahan Bandy and daughter, LeJane. In later years, Sybil enjoyed returning to attend her high school reunions and see old friends in LaFayette.

The Ruth Taylor Institute was her career job and it was there she became a nursing supervisor in the geriatrics unit of the large hospital. She was a compassionate nurse who made many lives better through her astute nursing skills. Sybil was one of a small number of nurses who started the Westchester County Professional Nurse’s Union and negotiated for significant benefits that exist today.

Retirement was when she shined and enjoyed life fully in the town of Cave Creek, Ariz., in the Sonoran Desert for over 20 years. Sybil formed strong friendships, took trips and volunteered in the Cave Creek museum. She was a “sunbird” who lived in her condo in the winter and house in Eugene, Ore., during the summers with her daughter Melissa and their cat Luna.

Her grandchildren were very important to Sybil and she dedicated a large amount of time and resources to helping Willow and Noah Taylor grow and thrive. Over the years they grew up, she flew to Oregon to spend every

holiday and flew them to N.Y. in the summers to see the city and share fun times.

“Nanny” made sure they knew she was there for them and loved. Later while living in Oregon, she cherished time spent with her great-grandchild, Sierra Vaquera and grandchild, Caitlin Moseley while they were growing up. Sybil and Melissa devoted hours of care doing creative activities with the two beloved girls, who are now 19 and 20.

She was our matriarch who cared deeply about family, always calling, helping and wanting to spend time together. Every year, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Fourth of July get-togethers were warm and fun events celebrated at her beautiful table with lovingly created Georgia home style cooking. Everything good in our lives came from her loving and giving nature.

Sybil is greatly missed by her family and friends who want to pay tribute to her life. Because she was an outstanding mother, friend, aunt, sister, grand and great-grandmother, she is beloved by many people. In the long run, Sybil Bandy Moseley accomplished many good things, but was always a woman who held strong values and beliefs from her childhood in LaFayette, Ga.

Survivors include: Her daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Jim) TaylorHinman of Portland, Ore.; son, Marshall Moseley of Cave Creek, Ariz.; grandchildren, Willow (Justin) Taylor of Vancouver, Wash., Noah Taylor of Portland, Ore., and Caitlin Moseley of Eugene, Ore, great-grandchild Sierra Vaquera of Eugene, Ore.; brother, Lee Bandy of Berea, Ky., and niece, LeJane Bandy (Rodney) Liebhart of Berea, Ky.
