Betty Jane Smith Boyd, 83 Chattanooga

Betty Jane (Smith) Boyd, of Chattanooga, Tenn., lost her brave and gallant fight to an illness Thursday, July 7, 2016, that she fought since November 2005. She transitioned to her new Heavenly home peacefully with her children by her side. She was 83.

The daughter of Andy and Marie Smith, she was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., Feb. 22, 1933.

During her life she was a long time registered member of the Eastern Star and was later active in the VFW Auxiliary, once serving as Sgt. at Arms.

She married Richard Boyd Jr., her childhood sweetheart, in Cleveland, Ohio Sept. 1, 1951, and the two shared their lives for the next 54 years until his unexpected passing Oct. 23, 2005.

Mrs. Boyd was quite a complex and resilient individual who enjoyed the finer things in life and whom definitely “danced” to the beat of her own drum. And dance she did. It was her passion. Throughout her life she enjoyed shopping for clothes, shoes and furniture. A true lady, she absolutely adored fine couture and wore fashions with great style and finesse.

She was great with a ball and glove but her passion in life was dancing. She and her husband captured many a spotlight on dance floors where observers would be in awe of their zeal for dance and their enthusiasm and love for one another and their shared enjoyment for dancing to country music.

Not only was she an accomplished dancer but she and her husband could couple roller-skate like none other, gliding across rinks with unparalleled style and grace. She also participated on bowling leagues and enjoyed annual vacations with her family in Florida, S. Carolina and Ober Gatlinburg. Favorite songs were “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” by the late Freddy Fender and “Could I Have This Dance” by Anne Murray.

Though retired for many years, she was a secretary and nurses assistant but most notably a meat wrapper in grocery stores includ- ing Red Food, Bi-Rite and Willie’s Super Markets for many years.

After living in her hometown of Chattanooga for several years, she and her husband bought a new home in Rossville, Ga., in 1966 where they raised four children. She moved to Chickamauga, Ga., in 2014, to live with her youngest daughter and son-in-law where she received the greatest of love and care. Her children kept their promise to her, which she was adamant, that she would never be placed in any assisted care facility. Nor that her healthcare be administered by strangers foreign to her. Rhonda, her youngest daughter, took absolute amazing care of her as she faced challenges over the past two years.

Mrs. Boyd was preceded death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Jerry Calvin Smith, Johnny Kenneth Smith, Jack Edward Smith, Richard Andrew Smith, Delmar Leroy Smith and sister, Darla Jean Smith.

Survivors include: Her daughters, Marilyn Dianne Goins of Rossville, Ga., Debra Kay (James) Wrinkle of Rossville, Ga., and Rhonda Teresa (Dewayne) Ball of Chickamauga, Ga.; son, Richard Allan Boyd of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; six grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews and long time family friends, Tracy Millican (whom she treated like a son) and Tom CoBurn.

She was blessed with an enduring life, was a Christian of the Baptist faith and was honored by God by answering her repeated prayer throughout her life of never having to face her greatest fear of having to bury one of her children during her life.

Mom, you permanently implanted and ingrained a loving unique iron brand on our hearts, our lives and our memories that will forever withstand the hands of time, the testament of our resolve and the endurance of our differences.

While we lose our beautiful and indisputable matriarch, God gains a glorious angelic lady who will wear her halo with defined beauty and grace. May you truly rest in peace, always watch over us and forever dance with Daddy to hymns of angels on God’s permanent golden dance floor until we see you again.

We kept our promises. You never went anywhere, you stayed right with us, had the very best of care and

we never let you hurt. You were and forever will be loved and we were blessed with the privilege of having you as our Mother.
