COMMUNITY · The Friends of the LaFayette Walker County Library, 305 South Duke Street, in LaFayette, will host a fundraiser called “Mock Tales” Saturday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. Cocktail attire. Cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, silent auction baskets and book readings. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance at the library or at Ty Willeford’s Edward Jones office at 503 North Main Street. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event. No alcohol will be served, only “mock cocktails.” Proceeds benefit library programs.

MEETING · The Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host its One-Walker Membership Luncheon Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Lookout Mountain Fairyland Club on Lookout Mountain. RECREATION · Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend the fourth local event to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Teams from the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball will play a special doubleheader in the recreation field at Chickamauga Battlefield Saturday, Aug. 27. Please follow the “Special Event” signs to the field for designated parking. Visitors can bring a lawn chair, a blanket, a picnic lunch (or purchase lunch from a vendor on-site) and step back in time to the 1860s to watch America’s national pastime as it was originally played. Kids will have opportunities to participate in other vintage games from the 1860s as well. At noon, the Highland Rim Distillers will play the Mountain City of Chattanooga and at 2:30 p.m. Phoenix of East Nashville plays Lightfoot of Chattanooga. COMMUNITY · Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a variety of living history programs taking place at Point Park, on Lookout Mountain and at Chickamauga Battlefield during Labor Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4. At Point Park, living historians will share the experiences of Confederate soldiers on the mountain during the Siege of Chattanooga. Programs, which will include rifle-firing demonstrations, are scheduled at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission to Point Park is $5 per adult, ages 16 and older (children, ages 15 and younger enter for free). At Chickamauga Battlefield, there will be artillery programs Saturday. Visitors will have the opportunity to see and hear a reproduction Civil War cannon firing and to learn about the role of artillery during the Battle of Chickamauga. Programs at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center are scheduled at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. There are no admission fees to Chickamauga Battlefield. COMMUNITY · The Chickamauga Lions Club will host a “Supermarket Sweep” drawing Thursday, Sept. 1, for the Sweep Saturday, Sept. 3, at 9:30 a.m. at Shop Rite, 200 Thomas Avenue, in Chickamauga. SCHOOLS · The LaFayette High School Homecoming Parade will be Thursday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m., beginning and ending in the old Lafayette High School parking lot. Any organization, school, church or civic group that is interested in participating should come by the LHS office and pick up an entry form. No four-wheelers, horses, go-carts or political advertisements allowed. Only entries that are registered at the high school will be allowed in the parade.
COMMUNITY · United Way asks nonprofit organizations to consider submitting a project proposal for the United Way Volunteer Center’s 27th annual Day of Caring. On Thursday, Sept. 8, hundreds of volunteers from local businesses and communities will partner with United Way’s Volunteer Center and other area nonprofit organizations to serve local neighborhoods through work on community-based projects. The center needs help to find unique volunteer projects where willing volunteers can serve and make the most impact in one day. Nonprofit (501c3) organizations are invited to submit a project need to United Way’s Volunteer Center. More than one project proposal may be submitted (and may be accepted) but each request must be submitted separately. COMMUNITY · The Catoosa County Library, 108 Catoosa Circle, in Ringgold, invites the community to hear family-friendly stories told by local storyteller Kay Rose Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11:30 a.m. Rose specializes in classic stories for children and families and will tell different stories each month based on a changing theme. She uses puppets, props and audience participation to make her stories fun and entertaining for all ages. As a former first grade teacher, she knows how to connect with children in a way that helps them understand the story instead of just listening.
REUNION · The West Side class of 1966 will host its 50th reunion Saturday, Sept. 10, at Red Clay State Park, 1140 SW Red Clay Park Road, Cleveland, Tenn. REUNION · The 70th annual Nance-Rollins family reunion will be Sunday, Sept. 25, at noon at the Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, east of Ringgold, Ga. The first Nance-Rollins Family Reunion was Sept. 28, 1946, at Catoosa Springs in honor of Claudia (Nance) Rollins, wife of W. Henry Rollins and mother of O. Wayne and John W. Rollins. For 70 years, this tradition has been kept alive and the family has gathered every year since then, to share old memories and create new ones.
