Lady Panthers cap another perfect week

- By Scott Herpst

It hasn’t always been easy for the Ridgeland Lady Panthers volleyball team so far this season, but the results to this point have always been the same. Victory. The Black-and-Silver ran their seasonopening winning streak to nine with three road victories last week and were slated to take that 9-0 record with them to Chattooga on Tuesday for a tri-match with Rockmart and the host Lady Indians.

Ridgeland opened last week with a quick trip up Highway 2A and returned home with a 25-20, 25-19 win at longtime rival LFO on Tuesday.

Te’a Owens continued to shine with 18 kills and four digs. Zady Carden had six kills and four digs, while Haleigh Fogtman collected five kills and Jamese Miller added four.

Taylor Williams racked up 31 assists to go with three aces and four digs, while libero Shelby Medlin added 11 digs in the win.

Ridgeland had also been scheduled to face Christian Heritage that night, but the Lady Lions cancelled and did not make the trip to Fort Oglethorpe.

Two nights later, the Lady Panthers kept rolling with a tri-match sweep in Floyd County.

Ridgeland hammered the Lady Colonels from Cass before surviving another tough match with the host Coosa Lady Eagles.

The Lady Panthers had little trouble with Cass, claiming a 25-10, 25-15 victory behind 10 kills and nine aces from Owens. Williams finished with eight assists and two digs, while Fogtman threw down two kills.

They would face Coosa again for the third time this season and were pushed to a third-set tiebreaker by the Lady Eagles for the second time before pulling out the win, 1825, 25-16, 16-14. Ridgeland staved off a Coosa match point at 14-13 in the third set before tying things up and getting the final two points to stay unbeaten on the year.

Owens had another big match with 19 kills, six digs and two aces. Williams dished out 26 assists to go with four kills, five digs and three aces. Carden chipped in with five kills and two aces, while Medlin collected 14 digs.

Another tough week will conclude with an all-Walker County trimatch between Ridgeland, Gordon Lee and LaFayette at LaFayette before the Lady Panthers will head back to Coosa for a tournament on Saturday.
