Ira Jackson Bowman Jr., 84 Ringgold

Ira “I.J.” Jackson Bowman Jr., of Ringgold, Ga., formerly of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Hospice of Chattanoog­a Care Center in Chattanoog­a. He was 84.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, retired from Bell South Telephone Company after 39 years of service and was a member of East Ridge Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ira J. Bowman Sr. and Mina Knight Bowman; siblings, Alice B. Grider, Louise B. Hassler, Robert M. Bowman, Fannie B. Bailey, Virginia Tullis Williams, Betty B. Williams and Nelson Bowman.

Survivors include: His wife of 64 years, Barbara Jean Trotter Bowman; children, Vicki (Bill) Melhorn of Chattanoog­a, Tim (Laurie) Bowman of Flintstone and Anita Kay Bowman of Ringgold; beloved sister, Anita B. Banadayga of Portland, Ore.; five grandchild­ren, Josh (Erin) Melhorn of Signal Mtn., Tim (Megan) Bowman of Chattanoog­a, Lyndi (Julio) Berrones of Nashville, Noah Ankar and Nicholas Ankar both of Ringgold; two great-grandchild­ren, Ally and Eden Melhorn and numerous loving family and friends.

Stephen Martin Wright, 52 Washington, D.C.

Stephen Martin Wright, of Washington, D.C., died unexpected­ly Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at his family home in Chattanoog­a, Tenn. He was 52.

Stephen was born in Chattanoog­a and was a graduate of Bright School, McCallie High School and Georgetown University.

He began a career of work in government affairs by serving as a legislativ­e assistant to congresswo­man Marilyn Lloyd for more than 10 years. He then went on to work as a lobbyist for the country of Togo followed by service as a congressio­nal aide to a Pennsylvan­ia congressma­n.

Upon being designated a Rotary Scholar, he broadened his background in government by attending the University of Ivory Coast. After his return, he entered the Yale School of Management and was granted a master’s degree in business administra­tion. His talents and experience were put to use by the New York City Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n for over 11 years, after which Stephen returned to Washington and worked in real estate. He was visiting with his father in Chattanoog­a at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Espy Wright who passed away in July of this year.

Survivors include: His father, John L. Wright Jr. of Chattanoog­a; brother, Jack Wright, III of San Antonio, Texas; aunt, Sidney Shipp of Charleston, S.C.; three nephews, three nieces, several cousins and numerous extended family and friends.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Jacqueline Baker Shain, 83 Greenville, S.C.

Jacqueline Baker Shain of Greenville, S.C., passed away Aug. 12, 2016. She was 83.

She was the wife of the late William Shain Sr.

Survivors include her four children, Alan (Michel), 62, Cindy (John Mark), 61, David (Joyce), 59, and Bill (Linda), 56. She is also survived by six grandchild­ren, Tracy, Travis, Hunter, Laura, Caroline and Tyler, and eight great-grandchild­ren.

She was raised in LaFayette, Ga., and won the title “Little Miss LaFayette” in 1940. She attended the University of Georgia, where she later received her fine arts degree. She wrote poetry and humor, was an art and photograph­y enthusiast, and often created her own greeting cards.

Robert J. Feinauer, 92 Ringgold

Robert J. Feinauer, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at his residence. He was 92. A native of Monitor Township, Mich., he lived in the Ringgold area for the past 34 years, and was previously of Garden Grove, Calif. He was owner-operator of Ace Tile for 20 years and was a member of The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Chattanoog­a, Tenn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Caroline Beiser Feinauer; sister, Stella Feinauer and three brothers, Clarence, Edgar and Theodore Feinauer.

Survivors include: His loving wife of 72 years, Arlene Marie Gerhauser Feinauer of Ringgold; six children, Donald (Judith) Feinauer of Ringgold, Mary Jane Ormsby of Ringgold, Duane (Diana) Feinauer of Corona, Calif., Dennis (Arlene) Feinauer of Fountain Valley, Calif., Dean (Karen) Feinauer of Rossville and Marlene (Douglas) Colbert of Ringgold; sister, Viola Belmlander of Mich.; 16 grandchild­ren, 24 greatgrand­children, two great-great-grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 300 and a World War II veteran. He was stationed in Japan and Guam while serving with the U.S. Army/Air Force. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in June of 1949.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Shirley Lee Bell Stoker, 85 Kensington, Ga.

Shirley Lee Stoker, lifelong resident of Kensington, Ga., lost her ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s and left to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Tuesday, Aug., 23, 2016, surrounded by her family and loved ones in the comfort of her home. She was 85.

Mrs. Stoker was a loving wife, mother, grandmothe­r, greatgrand­mother and friend. She was a vivid storytelle­r, truth-giver and could light up a room with her contagious laughter and smile.

A member and Sunday School teacher of Cassandra Baptist Church, Mrs. Stoker was incredibly missionmin­ded and a giving Christian. Her greatest achievemen­ts however, are the blessings she left behind.

Mrs. Stoker was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Wright and her parents, Roy and Lucile Bell.

Harold Thomas Huskey, 74 Harrison, Tenn.

Rev. Harold Thomas “Tommy” Huskey, of Harrison, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016. He was 74.

He was born in Chattanoog­a, Tenn., to the late Cicero and Rosa Huskey, but lived most of his life in the North Georgia area.

He was a Baptist minister for many years and was the founder of Shiloh Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe.

He was employed with Gibson Sheet Metal for more than 30 years and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a man that enjoyed working, building and was always putting others needs before his own. He loved horses and going to rodeos with his special friend, Judy Freeman.

He was a loving and devoted brother, father, grandfathe­r and greatgrand­father that will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Judith “Judy” Elaine Carter Pettyjohn, of LaFayette, Ga., passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016. She was 74.

She was born in Cleburne County, Ala., to the late Ivy E. and Dura Mae Pounds Carter.

She resided in the LaFayette area for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.

She was a homemaker and also worked at Buster Brown for several years. She enjoyed spending time and taking care of her family, especially her grandchild­ren. She was a fan of Elvis Presley so much so that she named her beloved dog “Presley.”

She devoted many years to taking care of her parents. Along with them she is preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Carter.

He was born in Trion, Ga., to the late Mart and Essie Lee Chapman. He resided in the LaFayette area for the past 57 years and was of the Baptist faith.

He went to work at the age of 14 at Trion Cotton Mill and worked several years at Crystal Springs Mill and Synthetic Industries both in Chickamaug­a, Ga.

He enjoyed playing the guitar and was very good at playing with his fingers instead of a pick. He also enjoyed fishing.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Hixson Chapman; sisters, Lorene Jones and Pearl Fox; brothers, Cecil, Napoleon, R.C. “Mark,” Willie, Charles and Johnny Chapman.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a member of Outreach Deliveranc­e Ministries and enjoyed watching the game show network on TV.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William Alton McConathy and several siblings.

Larry Wayne Brown, 73 Rossville

Larry Wayne Brown, of Laurelwood Estates in Rossville, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, at his residence. He was 73.

He was a graduate of Chattanoog­a Valley High School and lived most of his life in North Georgia with his family. His only absence from his home was the time he served his country with the U.S. Marines and was awarded The National Defense Service Metal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Larry was a loving and faithful husband, a devoted father and a friend to everyone who knew him. He loved to spend time with his family, relic hunt, fish, yard sale, garden and cook. He enjoyed playing the guitar, coaching softball and was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.

Larry was a member of the VFW post #3679, American Legion #217, Vietnam Veterans Chapter #203 and volunteere­d with the Railroad Museum in Chickamaug­a.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lula Bell Brown; sister, Charlene Davis and brother, Jim Brown.

Casey Dane McCauley, of LaFayette passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016. He was 63.

Brenda Gail Baer, of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2016. She was 52.

She was born Dec. 24, 1963, to the late Thomas Thornton Sharp and Joyce Ann Harris Sharp.

Also preceding her in death is her sister, Tammy Wallin and brother, Thomas Sharp.

Charles Conn Hegwood, 88 LaFayette

Charles Conn Hegwood, of LaFayette, Ga., passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at Cameron Hall of Canton in Canton, Ga. He was 88.

Conn was born May 26, 1928, in LaFayette, the eldest son of Horace and Ethel (Williams) Hegwood. He was one of seven children and until a few years ago lived next door to the house where he was raised.

Conn retired in 1985 after 37 years with the Quality Control lab at DuPont in Chattanoog­a. He was called “Charlie” by his friends and he was constantly sharing stories from work.

An avid Braves fan, he rarely missed watching them play on his big screen television. He loved quail hunting and watching his dogs search for the next covey.

After he retired, he traveled extensivel­y with family and friends to Alaska (his first commercial plane ride) and other places far beyond his corner of North Georgia and his beloved mountains. Following a trip out west with his wife, Betty, he said he was glad to be back home in the real mountains because “those out West were just rocks.”

He loved all kinds of music and traveled often to Gatlinburg to enjoy the musical production­s. He was a car enthusiast and, after retiring, bought a motorcycle that carried him on many trips with a local motorcycle club.

His favorite pastime, however, centered on his grandson, Ryan. The two of them spent many hours together fishing, hunting and rebuilding cars for Ryan. He was proud to have put Jan, Connie and Ryan through college.

Conn was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50plus years, Betty Turner Hegwood; his brother, Gene and sister Jimmye.

Survivors include: His daughters, Janice (Randy) Hegwood Garbiel of Waleska, Ga., Connie (Steven) Hegwood Long of Nashville, Tenn.; grandson, Ryan (Claire) Long of Nashville; sisters, Sue Howell, Wylene Selman and Katheryn Pilgrim and 12 nieces and nephews.

Zan Ray James, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016. He was 83.

A native of Harrell, Ark., he lived in the Ringgold area for the past 26 years and was formerly of Cross City, Fla.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired employee of Shaw Industries and was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church.

Atsuko Sue Ohst, 84 Covesville, Va.

Atsuko Sue Ohst, of Covesville, Va., (formerly of LaFayette, Ga.) passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016. She was 84.

Sue was born in Japan June 15, 1932. She met a young soldier Feb. 26, 1956, and married the love of her life. They were married 60 years.

Sue was a profession­al seamstress and worked in Chicago, Chattanoog­a, Rossville and LaFayette for 35 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shinichi and Takayo Arimori and two sisters.

Survivors include: Her husband of 60 years, Harold Levi Ohst; daughter, Diana (Chris); grandson, Jacob Rexrode; daughter, Peggy Hill and granddaugh­ter, Lauren Powell.
