August mintues of Walker Democrats meeting
The Walker County Democrats met Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Dari Dip in LaFayette. A large and enthusiastic group heard a report by George Rogers from the Dalton-Whitfield Rally Aug. 20, where senatorial candidate Jim Barksdale spoke.
Then there was a discussion of the proposed amendment to the Georgia Constitution (Opportunity School District or OSD) which will be on the ballot in November. The wording: “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow the state to intervene in chronically failing public schools in order to improve student performance?” is very deceptive. It is actually a school takeover plan designed to benefit forprofit charter schools at the expense of funding a public education for all students. After years of austerity cuts, it would transfer more money from taxpayers to private schools and reduce funding for public schools. Georgia already has an existing agency that works with failing schools with a good record of success. Walker Democrats oppose this amendment.
A motion was made by Nick Nicholas (1) and Sherman Gibbs (2) to purchase 100 Clinton-Kaine yard signs. Passed unanimously.
There will be a central office soon where citizens may pick up Democratic campaign materials.
There was a discussion of ethics in government and a plan to help with voter registration drives.
The next meeting will be September 22, Thursday, 6:30 pm at Greg’s Restaurant in Chickamauga.
