Walker Farm Bureau hosts educator workshop and farm tour
Walker County Farm Bureau held an educator workshop and farm tour Tuesday, Aug. 30. President Mike Bunn opened the event held at the Walker County GA Center, in Rock Spring, Ga., by welcoming the teachers and by giving an overview of the day’s activities and was enjoyed by 28 Walker County elementary school teachers.
The event is designed for each teacher to gain additional effective strategies for teaching, connect to community resources, visit area agriculture enterprises in a unique experience, increase their network of educator contacts. They received more than $100 in resource material for their classroom.
Donna Rocker, our AG in the classroom Coordinator, spoke to teachers about creative methods they can use to help their students learn about agriculture. She expressed the importance of using agriculture as a teaching tool with practical application in the classroom while meeting state standards. She also talked about using community resources and knowledge about local agriculture to help inspire students to stay in school and broaden their perspec- tive of jobs.
Farm stops were Huntland Farms. Berry Family Farm is a continual farmland since the 1830; Huntland farm raises beef cattle and also hay.
Phil Shattuck, assistant manager, was there to demonstrate how to mix and load fertilizer by the truckload.
During the event Walker County Farm Bureau Agency manager and staff provided breakfast for the teachers. Snack was sponsored by Southeastern Co-Op and lunch was provided by Walker County Farm Bureau.
Present during the workshop was Walker County school superintendent Damon Raines; curriculum-instruction and professional development Robin Samples; GFB district field representative Roby Murray; Walker County office manger Kyla Compton and WCFB President Mike Bunn.
