Ramblers drop to 1-1 at Dade County

- By Scott Herpst

The LaFayette Middle School Ramblers gave up the first and last touchdowns of the game and fell to 1-1 after a 24-14 defeat at the hands of the Dade County Wolverines in Trenton on Thursday.

After a half-hour weather delay, Dade scampered 76 yards on the opening kickoff to jump out to the 6-0 lead. The two-point try was no good.

LaFayette was forced to punt on its first possession — a 40-yard Eli Prince boot — but the Wolverines would fumble the wet pigskin and the Ramblers took advantage as Lennard Pullom would recover the loose ball.

With 3:58 left in the first quarter, tailback Jalen Suttle would crash in from the 1-yard line, but a missed conversion would keep the score tied at 6-6.

Dade would answer with 5:10 left before halftime on a 28-yard TD run and another failed conversion would put the score at 12-6 as the Wolverines would take that advantage into intermission.

But less than two minutes into the third quarter, LaFayette would take its first lead of the night. Suttle broke free on a 57-yard scoring run and quarterback Cade Fisher would call his own number on the conversion to put the Orangeand-Black up 14-12 with 6:18 left in the third.

However, the joy would not last long as Dade countered with a 59-yard TD run with 4:42 left in the third to regain an 18-14 lead.

After stopping LaFayette’s ensuing possession, Dade would tack on some insurance via a 4-yard TD run 11 seconds into the final period. The Wolverine defense would take care of the rest by keeping the Ramblers off the board the rest of the way.

LaFayette will host Saddle Ridge on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. It will be Homecoming at LMS.
