Raiders rally for road win over Ramblers

- By Scott Herpst

The LaFayette Ramblers rallied from a 10-0 first-quarter hole to grab a 12-10 lead over Southeast Whitfield at halftime on Friday night.

However, they weren’t able to hang on as the Raiders scored the final two touchdowns of the game and claimed a 24-21 victory in a Region 6-4A contest at Jack King Stadium.

KaDarrin Ramsey had 50 yards rushing on 11 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns for LaFayette. Colton Lane added 35 yards on 12 carries and caught one pass, good for 11 yards, while quarterback Logan Teasley had a teamhigh 67 yards rushing on 12 carries. He also completed 2 of 5 passes for 59 yards with one TD and one interception.

After falling behind, 10-0, the Ramblers would use a 48-yard TD catch by Dakota Cathey and a 4-yard TD run by Ramsey to take a 12-10 lead into halftime.

LaFayette would get a safety in the third quarter as a bad snap on a punt attempt by the Raiders rolled out of the end zone. The Ramblers would take over at their own 45 after the free kick and marched right back downfield before Ramsey scored on another touchdown run, this one from eight yards out. Max Studdard’s point after gave LaFayette a 21-10 lead.

But Southeast would answer as two Luke Johns runs took off yardage in chunks before Brian Parks found a hole and raced 25 yards for the score. Simon Martel added the PAT, which cut LaFayette’s lead to 21-17 as the game moved into the fourth quarter.

The Raider defense would force a LaFayette punt from its own 20 and a short kick would give Southeast possession at the Ramblers’ 46-yard line. Then on third-and-long, Taylor Shirah took a quick screen pass and scampered 35 yards to the LaFayette 10. Three plays later, Shirah ran it in from five yards out and Martel’s kick put Southeast back in front by three.

An exchange of punts followed, giving LaFayette one final possession late in the game. The Ramblers picked up an initial first down, but Southeast would record sacks on back-to-back plays before picking off a Teasley pass to seal the win.

Jonah Hobbs had six tackles, including one for loss, and assisted on five more to pace the Rambler defense. Andrew Pendergrass, T.J. Dixon and Grant Blaschke each had a sack and Lane finished with three tackles for loss.

LaFayette (2-3, 0-1) will be back in action this Friday night at Northwest Whitfield.
