Sen. Jeff Mullis on the Opportunity School District Amendment
Republican Sen. Jeff Mullis of Chickamauga on Oct. 7 released this statement on the Opportunity School District Amendment:
“I support the Opportunity School District Amendment which will be Amendment 1 on the ballot in November. Georgia’s Constitution requires the state to offer quality education to children throughout the state. It is our responsibility to provide the best education possible to ensure that our children have every opportunity for intellectual growth and academic success. Georgia provides billions of dollars for education each year and has the authority to hold schools to a certain standard.
“Schools that are not meeting Georgia’s standards are failing our children. This has been an issue for several years and it is time we make a change and find solutions. Allowing the status quo to remain will be detrimental to the academic success of our children. We can and must do better. Our children deserve the best education possible and a learning environment that pushes them to grow intellectually and socially. Fostering an environment where students can achieve an award winning education will prepare them for a brighter and better future. We need to do what is best for the long-term wellbeing of our students, our education system and the future of our state.”
Earlier this week, the senator affirmed his support of the amendment.
The state pays more than the local counties or federal government to support education so what do we need to do to provide that guaranteed ‘quality education’ if schools are consistently failing to meet minimum standards?” Mullis said. “What solutions are being offered by those opposed to this amendment? Are there better solutions? As a legislator, I’ve not been shown any better solutions to this ongoing problem.”
