Trojans pick up fifth win with rout of North Cobb Christian

- By Tyler Duke

Behind running back Drew Cobb, Gordon Lee rushed for 269 yards and defeated North Cobb Christian on Friday, 42-6.

Cobb finished with 187 total yards and five touchdowns. He rushed 21 times for 159 yards and three scores, while picking up 30 yards in receiving and scoring on both of his receptions.

“He’s an outstanding football player,” North Cobb Christian coach Mark Hollars said. “He runs hard and he’s got really good vision. We were able to bottle him up just a little but not as much as we would have liked to.”

Leading 14-0 midway into the second quarter, the Trojans marched down the field into Eagles territory with a ground-heavy attack.

Cobb put Gordon Lee at the 1-yard line with a 2-yard run, but a personal foul after the play knocked it back 15 yards. On secondand-goal from the 16yard line, quarterback Austin Thompson found Harrison Moore for a touchdown on a rollout pass to the left sideline, but another flag knocked the Trojans back, this time a 10-yard holding penalty.

Facing second-andgoal, Thompson threw a high fade to the left corner of the end zone and found Cobb, who went up high to come down with ball for a 28yard touchdown catch.

North Cobb Christian moved the ball into Gordon Lee territory for the first time on its fourth drive with a 20yard run by C.J. Ayers. Tim Walker found space and sprinted in for a 30-yard touchdown, but the run was negated by a holding penalty and the Eagles would go on to turn the ball over on downs with just more than a minute left in the first half.

The Trojans quickly capitalized on the opportunity. After a 7-yard run by Cobb, Thompson found a wide open Kannen Derryberry in the middle of the field. Walker chased down Derryberry from behind at the 6-yard line after a 61-yard gain. Two plays later, Thompson delivered a 2-yard touchdown throw to Cobb for his fourth score of the half, putting Gordon Lee ahead, 28-0.

K.P. Pierre gave the Eagles their first touchdown on a 27yard run early in the fourth quarter after quarterback Anson Mathis converted a third down pass to Lee Cunningham.

A 36-yard run by Braden Jarvis put Gordon Lee into NCCS territory on its third possession of the first half. Cobb, who opening the scoring on a 5-yard run on the Trojans’ first possession, capped the march with four consecutive runs, the last going for 24 yards to put Gordon Lee ahead 14-0.

Beginning the second half in Eagles territory, the Trojans used five runs to get in the end zone, finished off by a 4-yard touchdown run by Cobb, his fifth of the game.

Jarvis gave Gordon Lee a 42-0 lead with a 44-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. He finished with 104 yards rushing on just seven carries. Thompson had 110 yards in the air, while Derryberry paced the Trojans with 70 yards on two grabs.

Gordon Lee (5-3, 2-3) will head south to Trion this Friday to face the Bulldogs in their annual rivalry game.

Both teams need the victory to try and get into the Class 1A Public School state playoffs. Gordon Lee is projected to be No. 24 in the power rankings this week, while Trion is projected to be at No. 27. Only the top 24 make the field.

This week’s rankings were not available as of press time.
