COMMUNITY · All interested persons are invited to a seminar on healing communities Thursday, Nov. 10, from noon-2 p.m., in the fellowship hall of LaFayette First United Methodist, beginning with lunch furnished by LaFayette Presbyterian. A team from the Faith and Justice Initiative of the Governor’s Office of Transition, Support, and Reentry led by the Rev. Tony Lowden will introduce Georgia’s Model of Healing Communities. This is an approach to helping persons released from the correctional system to build new lives by becoming integrated into local churches, which provide an essential support system. The seminar is sponsored by the LaFayette Area Correctional Task Force, a community group seeking to help people involved with the correctional system to become contributing members of the community. All interested persons and congregations in the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit (Walker, Dade, Catoosa, and Chattooga Counties) are encouraged to attend. COMMUNITY · On Thursday, Nov. 10, the “Pinta” and the “Nina,” replicas of Columbus’ ships will open in Chattanooga, Tenn. They will be docked at Chattanooga Pier, next to the Tennessee Aquarium, 100 Riverfront Parkway, until their departure Monday, Nov. 28. Closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 24. While in port, the public is invited to visit the ships for a walk aboard self-guided tour. Prices are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students 5-16. Children 4 and under free. COMMUNITY · The city of LaFayette and Downtown Development Authority will host the fifth annual Reindeer Run Saturday, Dec. 3. Racers kick off at Joe Stock Memorial Park in LaFayette at 9 a.m. This is a family-friendly event with Santa, elves, hot chocolate and more. Reindeer antlers will be on sale before the race for $1. The money raised goes to fund the 13th annual LaFayette Shop with a Cop/Firefighter program. Local police and firefighters take 30 to 40 kids shopping for Christmas presents for themselves and their families. The event includes a ride to the Walmart store in a fire truck. COMMUNITY · Ty Willeford, an Edward Jones financial advisor in LaFayette, is supporting the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, which services several surrounding counties, including Walker, by using his office as a drop-off location for a canned food drive. Local residents may help support this effort by bringing in items to the Edward Jones branch office through Friday, Dec. 16. Food donations may be dropped off at 503 North Main Street in LaFayette during regular business hours. Suggested food items include boxed mac and cheese, beans, peanut butter, canned vegetable and meats, and dried goods such as flour, sugar and cornmeal.
COMMUNITY · The Family Crisis Center is seeking volunteers to play with children one night a week. You must be 18 years old and undergo a background check. This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on these children and provide some much needed help and support to the family members caring for these kids. The Family Crisis Center of Walker, Dade, Catoosa, and Chattooga Counties helps families live abuse free and is supported in part through donations to the shelter and the thrift stores. COMMUNITY · Summerville, Ga., is gearing up for its annual “Steam into Summerville Railroad Days,” a seven-week celebration that ushers in fall and visitors of
all ages, bringing a wide array of festivities to Summerville’s Dowdy Park and the Summerville Depot. The Tennessee Valley Railroad’s Summerville Steam Excursion will arrive at the historic Summerville Depot each Saturday beginning Oct. 1-Nov. 12. Steam engine passenger trains are also set to arrive at the depot Sundays, Oct. 30, and Nov. 13. Tickets are purchased through the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at tvrail.com. These vintage train rides follow a historic route from Grand Junction Station in Chattanooga to the Historic Summerville Depot. To close out the “Steam into Summerville Railroad Days” there will be double steam engine arrivals Nov. 12 and 13.
