- By Adam Cook

The Family Crisis Center of Catoosa, Walker, Dade, and Chattooga Counties recently received a $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation as part of its 20-year anniversary celebration.

With October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Mary Kay Foundation decided to celebrate its twentieth year by giving $3 million worth of grants to 150 shelters across the country.

The unrestricted grants are designed to help combat domestic violence, educate communities, and to better the personnel and equipment of shelters.

The grants were awarded in early October to shelters in 49 different states, the District of Columbia, and even in Guam.

According to Shelter Director Kristy Lawson, the Family Crisis Center will use the funds to hire a needed counselor.

“We’re really excited about the grant,” Lawson said. “We’re going to hire a part-time counselor who will work with domestic violence groups in the evening for women and teens residing in the shelter.”

To date, the Mary Kay Foundation’s annual shelter grant program has contributed $38.6 million to the effort.

“The fact that shelters across the country can use these unrestricted funds to best fit their immediate needs has often made the difference in doors staying open or closed, helped maintain a critical service, or provided a life-saving safe place for a family in need,” said Anne Crews, board member for the Mary Kay Foundation and vice president of public affairs for Mary Kay Inc. “As the foundation celebrates 20 years of making a difference in the lives of women and children, we are proud to continue our signature domestic violence program in communities nationwide. We know hundreds of thousands of lives have been impacted, not only today, but for generations to come.”
