Low numbers hurting Lady Bobcats

- By Scott Herpst

The visiting Judson (Ala.) College Lady Eagles drained nine 3-pointers last Tuesday night, eight coming in the first half, as they kept the Georgia Northwestern Lady Mustangs winless on the season with a 69-26 win at the Rossville Athletic Center.

Judson led 22-7 after one period and 42-13 at intermission after shooting 57 percent (8 of 14) from behind the arc. Kenzie McDaniel led the way with four treys, including three in the second quarter.

Georgia Northwestern played better in the third quarter as Judson won the period by just a single point, 10-9.

However, foul trouble would hamper the already shorthanded Lady Bobcats as two of their seven available players picked up their fifth fouls, forcing the home team to play with just five players for the final seven minutes.

That number was reduced by one with 3:15 to play as Kaylin Graham temporarily had to leave the game after taking a blow to the eye, although she did re-enter the game in the final minute.

McDaniel led all scorers with 21 points for the Lady Eagles, while Bailey Davis had 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Katy Phillips broke out an early-season shooting slump with 14 points for the Lady Bobcats. Sharqueva McCoy had five points and grabbed three rebounds, while Carrie Benedict added four points. Kambria Bankston and Sprite Dyer added five rebounds each.

“One of the things we talk about in the locker room is slowing the game down,” Lady Bobcats head coach David Stephenson said. “When we slow it down and take time off the clock, there are a lot of things that work to our advantage.

“But we only have seven players and that’s killing us right now. Whether Madison (Lewis) will be able to come back in the second semester from having her (knee) surgery is still up in the air. That would give us eight players, but only having seven just makes it hard to do a lot of things.

“I see improvement in some areas in every game, but we’re still a long way off from being able to do what we really need to do.”

On Saturday in Nashville, the Lady Bobcats fell to 0-4 on the season, despite a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double by McCoy.

Phillips finished with five points, three assists and two rebounds. Dyer had four points and seven boards, while Bankston grabbed four rebounds and had one steal.

The Lady Bobcats will host Trinity Baptist College at the Rossville Athletic Center on Nov. 22. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
