NGAC Wrestling: Teams get in final mat time before holiday hiatus

The Saddle Ridge Mat Mustangs split a home tri-match with Lakeview and Gordon Lee last Tuesday afternoon.

Saddle Ridge 54, Lakeview 36

The Mustangs opened the tri-match with a win over the Warriors. Aiden Cook (94), Sullivan (100), Steven Sanford (108), Chase Blevins (140), Dakota Catlett (165) and Lankford (HWT) won by pin, while Karson Ledford (115), Carson Lanier (123) and Dylan Parker (130) picked up forfeit wins.

Chesley Williams and Connor Fitzgerald each won by pinfall in junior varsity matches.

Gordon Lee 74, Saddle Ridge 12

Against the Trojans, the Mustangs’ two varsity wins were turned in by Sullivan (100) and Lankford (HWT), who each won by pin. Landon Plank won by pin in a JV match.

CVMS 43, Saddle Ridge 42

The Eagles pulled out a narrow one-point home win over the Mustangs in an NGAC dual match on Friday afternoon.

Forfeit wins by Hunter Fahrubel (72 pounds) and Andrew Chapman (78) gave the Eagles a quick 12-0 and Sam Dickson scored a 12-2 major decision to boost the lead to 16-0.

But back came the Mustangs as Cook (94), Sullivan (100), Sanford (108) and Ledford (115) reeled off four straight pins to put the Navyand-Red in front, 24-16.

Markease Ross got three points back for the Eagles with a 7-6 win at 123, but a pin by Parker at 130 gave the Mustangs their biggest lead of the night at 3019.

However, Dakota Gann would counter with a pin for CVMS at 140 and Elijah O’Shields won by forfeit at 150 to push the Eagles back in front, 31-30.

The two teams would flip-flop the final four bouts. Catlett got a pin for the Mustangs at 165 before Kyle Brown won by pin for the Eagles at 180 to maintain the onepoint advantage. The final two matches would be split as each team earned six points for a forfeit win. Ethan Macey won at 220 for CVMS and Lankford won at 285 for Saddle Ridge.

Mustangs go 2-2 at Turkey Duals

On Saturday at Heritage Middle School, the Mustangs opened with a 51-30 loss to Eastbrook. Cook (86 pounds), Plank (94), Sullivan (100), Ledford (108) and Lanier (123) scored pins for Saddle Ridge.

The Navy-and-Red bounced back with a 48-18 victory over Lakeview, thanks to pins by Plank, Cook, Sullivan and Blevins. Ledford, Lanier, Sanford and Parker each picked up a win by forfeit.

Lamarcus Bailey with three and Ashton Tuner with two.

Individual statistics for LaFayette were not provided as of press time.

CVMS JV boys 36, Rossville 12

The Eagles picked up the win on Monday behind a balanced scoring effort. Clark and Bailey had six points each. Martin and Chanse Lewis both had five, while Ashton Turner and Klein each scored four. Roger Paris (3), Austin Acuff (2) and Izaac Bryant (1) rounded out the scoring.

Individual statistics for Rossville were not provided as of press time.

Ringgold boys 42, Saddle Ridge 26

Despite an 18-point effort by Chris Bell, the Mustangs dropped to 0-3 with a Tuesday night loss at Ringgold.

Brent Minor added three points for the Navy-and-Red, while Braeden Holland and Ethan Kruger both chipped in with two apiece.

Saddle Ridge JV boys 29, Trion 26

The junior varsity Mustangs picked up the program’s initial win over the Bulldogs last Monday night.

After leading 10-5 at intermissi­on, the Mustangs saw the Bulldogs rally for an early fourth-quarter lead. However, Saddle Ridge would come back to collect the win behind 19 points from Holland.

Teddy Ownby, Jaiden Smith, Cole Canfield and Brady Mullaly had two points apiece and Christian Howard chipped in by knocking down a late free throw. Howard, along with Canfield and Mullaly, all had solid games on the offensive and defensive boards, while Ownby and Cole Spears anchored the defensive effort.
