Bobcats do their part to help the hungry in Walker County

- By Scott Herpst

The Georgia Northwestern men’s and women’s basketball programs recently tipped off the 2016-2017 season by taking part in one of the athletic department’s largest and most time-honored community services projects.

The Bobcats’ annual Food Drive Games against visiting Toccoa Falls College on Nov. 4 allowed fans to get in for free with the donation of a nonperishable food item. Monetary donations were also accepted at the door.

The collected food, some 400 pounds of it, will all be donated to the Care Mission of LaFayette.

“We’ve been holding our Food Drive Games for seven years now,” head coach David Stephenson explained. “Several years ago, I developed a relationship with the Care Mission. We started out by getting the food on our own and taking it down there. A couple of years later, we decided to have the fans bring in food too, and that’s when we came up with the idea for the Food Drive Games. The women’s team got involved as well, once the program moved its base to Rossville.”

The Care Mission of LaFayette has been serving the physical and spiritual needs of Walker County citizens since 2005.

More information about the Care Mission and their work in the county can be found on their website at thecaremission.org.

Georgia’s Northwestern’s charity efforts will continue with their annual Toy Drive Games, which will be held during the Tim Walthour Memorial Tournament Dec. 9-10.

Fans will be admitted free with the donation of an unwrapped children’s toy.
