Just two dates into their 2016-2017 schedule and the Gordon Lee High School wrestling team is just one point away from perfection.

After going 4-1 at the J.C. Ferrell Duals at Central-Carroll this past Saturday, where their lone loss came at the hands of Class 4A LaGrange, 37-36, the Mat Trojans picked up three more victories on Tuesday afternoon at Dade County High School.

Gordon Lee opened the quad-match with a 63-6 victory over what has been a traditionally strong Fort Payne, Ala. program. Starting at 120 pounds, the Trojans led 39-0 before forfeiting six points to the Wildcats. They finished up with three pins and a final forfeit to close it out.

Against the host Wolverines, there was plenty of lineup shuffling as the Trojans forfeited in three weight classes and Dade gave up forfeits in two. The Wolverines would win once by pin and twice in minor decisions, but Gordon Lee would pick up five pins and a major to claim a 46-30 win.

The Navy-and-White concluded their day by rolling over shorthanded Coosa, 66-6. Gordon Lee gave up a forfeit at 182 to provide the Eagles with their only points.

“We had some close matches early against Fort Payne and, luckily, we came out on top,” head coach Jason Mull said. “That match was probably a little closer than the score looked.”

Hunter Burnette (106 pounds) had three wins on the afternoon, all by pin. Gavin Graham (145) had a pair of pins and a forfeit win, while Jasper Wilson (120) had one pin, one forfeit and one minor decision. Caleb Vines (220) had one forfeit win and two pins, the last pin coming against Coosa as he reversed a near-fall situation to earn the victory.

Jarrett Lassetter got a forfeit win at 160 against Fort Payne and a pin at 170 against Coosa. He also scored a pin in an exhibition match against Dade. Braden Jarvis had pins at both 170 and 182 to go 2-0 on the day. Zach Murdock collected one win by forfeit at 170 and earned a pin at 160. Tucker Miller (126) went 2-0 with a major and a minor and Jared Spradlin (285) had a pin and a forfeit to go 2-0.

Also wrestling for the Trojans on Tuesday was Hunter Hartman (2-1 at 132), Caiden Scroggins (2-1 at 138 with two pins), Shaun Chapman (2-1 at 113), Lane Hughes (1-0 at 160 with one pin), and Joshua Carroll (126) and Carson Akins (285), who each earned forfeit wins versus Coosa.

“Overall, I think we’re doing well,” added Mull, whose team is now 7-1 in dual matches this season. “We’ve got a couple of holes in our lineup because we have a couple of kids hurt, but if we can get healthy, stay healthy and get the kids where they need to be, I think we’ll be okay.”

Gordon Lee will face what might be their toughest test of the season to date on Tuesday when they travel down Highway 27 to face a strong Trion squad that recently placed third at the Ringgold Invitational.

The Trojans will head to Carroll County again this weekend to participate in a tournament at Mt. Zion.
