Mamie Houston Walker, 94, LaFayette

Mamie Houston Walker, of LaFayette, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. She was 94. She was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Dalton, Ga., to the late William H. and Minnie Houston. Mamie moved to LaFayette with her beloved husband, Earl Walker and her four children as Mr. Walker assumed an engineerin­g position at E.T. Barwick Mills.

Mrs. Walker was devoted to her family and is best known to the community through her long associatio­n with Walker County Schools. She was known as Mama Walker for her caretaking and many kindnesses to principals, staff, teachers and students throughout her 20 years of service as an administra­tive assistant.

She began her career as secretary for the LaFayette Junior High School when the school opened and remained at the current LaFayette Middle School until retirement.

Mrs. Walker was a member of First Baptist Church of LaFayette for over 50 years, the Mary Christian I Circle of First Baptist Church of LaFayette, the Womens Missionary Union and a member of the Walraven Sunday School Class.

Her participat­ion in civic organizati­ons throughout the years included the LaFayette Womens Club and the Crochet Club as well as the North LaFayette Parent Teacher Organizati­on as both an officer and volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Walker Sr.; her son, Charles E. Walker Jr.; her brother, Harland Houston; sister, Pearl Patterson and grandson, Richard Haman Walker.

Survivors include: Her children, Raymond A. (Jane) Walker of Chesterfie­ld, Va., Randall A. (Gail) Walker of LaFayette, Melissa W. (Charles) Mathis of Rock Spring, Ga., and daughter-inlaw, Debbie H. Walker of Panama City, Fla.

Survivors include: Eight grandchild­ren, Scott (Carrie) Walker of San Marino, Calif., Keith (Amy) Walker of Chesterfie­ld, Va., Randall A. Walker Jr., of LaFayette, Wendy (Kris) Doyle of Suwanee, Ga., Charles E. Walker III of Panama City, Fla., Jennifer (Patrick) Bruce of Auburn, Ala., and Rachel H. Mathis of Falls Church, Va.; 12 great-grandchild­ren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: Monday, Jan. 2, from noon until time of service at First Baptist Church LaFayette.

Funeral services: Monday, Jan. 2, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church LaFayette, 201 North Main St., LaFayette, Ga.

Burial: LaFayette Memory Gardens.

Karen Ann Hegg Epps, 65, Ringgold

Karen Ann Hegg Epps, of Ringgold, Ga. passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016. She was 65.

A resident of the Ringgold area for the past 47 years, she was formerly of Chicago, Ill.

Karen was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service where she worked for 32 years and was of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold John Hegg Sr., and Florence Helena Lawson Hegg; two brothers, Gary Hegg and Harold John Hegg Jr., and one half brother, Harold John Hegg Jr.

Survivors include: Her loving husband of 47 years, Earl Franklin Epps Sr. of Ringgold; four children, Earl F. (Patty) Epps Jr. of Ringgold, Damion (Lori) Epps of Chatsworth, Ga., Jimmy (Amber) Epps of Ringgold and Devona (Tony) Hall of Ringgold; one brother, Bruce Hegg Sr. of St. Paul, Minn.; four sisters, Nancy (Len) Harwell of McHenry, Ill., Jean Johnson of McHenry, Ill., Donna (Ed) Snyder of Hopkins, Minn., and Joy (Norm) Eichmann of McHenry, Ill.; 11 grandchild­ren, four great-grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews.

John James Burgess, 72, LaFayette

John James “Jay” Burgess, of LaFayette, Ga., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 72.

He was born in St. Louis, Miss., to the late John Basil and Viola Ruth Rolph Burgess. Jay grew up in Wichita, Kan. before moving to the North Georgia area and was of the Methodist faith.

He was an Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam War and retired from the Air National Guard.

He was an avid reader and historian. He enjoyed running, writing science fiction, traveling and photograph­y. He had a passion for computers and was employed with the City of Chattanoog­a for more than 20 years as a computer operations specialist.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfathe­r who will be truly missed by all who knew him.

He was also preceded in death by two nephews, Brent Tice and Teddy Tice.

Survivors include: His loving wife of more than 48 years, Sue Shaw Burgess of LaFayette; sons, John Victor (Blakely Campbell) Burgess of LaFayette and James Shaw Burgess of Ringgold, Ga.; sisters, Sharon Koschar and Janice Miller both of Ohio and Virginia and (Larry) Tice of Mississipp­i; five grandchild­ren, Tatum, Mallorie, Connor, Eric and Henry Burgess and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 27, after 5 p.m. and prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Linda Joy Foshee, of Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., went to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016. She was 63.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Austin and Eula Cooper; husband, Curtis Ray Foshee; brother, David Cooper and two sisters, Carolyn Nix and Jackie Kilgore.

Emil Anthony Knott, 89, LaFayette

Emil Anthony Knott, of LaFayette, Ga., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016. He was 89.

He was born Feb. 6, 1927, in Braidwood, Ill., to the late Charles Jr. and Mary Knott and was a resident of LaFayette for the past 17 years.

He was a Navy veteran of WWII and was a longstandi­ng member of the American Legion Post # 298. He was previously employed with A.O. Smith Corporatio­n for more than 30 years as a machine operator.

He enjoyed catfishing, working on cars and loved polka music.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae Vogrin Knott; daughters, Terri and Linda Knott and his brother, Charles Knott.

Survivors include: His daughter, Janice Cooper; stepdaught­er, Cindy Divine both of LaFayette; two grandchild­ren, Mark Ravens of Cleveland, Tenn., and Hunter Cooper of LaFayette; one great-granddaugh­ter, Amora Ravens; stepgrandc­hildren, Sara and Jenna Divine of Washington; Kenn Cahill Jr. and Amy Cahill of Georgia and numerous extended family and friends.

Dewey Masters, of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016. He was 87.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanoog­a and North Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Leonard (Annie) Masters; siblings, Rueben Masters, Betty Jo Bogozan, Margarette Rogers, Gertrude Masters, Johnny Masters and Jewell Rhinehart.

Maxine Elizabeth Stapp Bramlett, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2016. She was 90.

She was a lifelong resident of the Ringgold area.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William F. Bramlett; parents, John Thomas and Sally Elmira Plott Stapp and brother, Melton Eugene Stapp.

Charles Mangrum, 53, Chattanoog­a

Charles Mangrum, of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was 53.

Charles was born June 15, 1963, to the late William and Evelyn Mangrum.

He is also preceded in death by two brothers, James Mangrum and Dennis Mangrum and a sister, Wanda Dockery.

He worked at Waffle House as cook and manger. During his life he enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, playing jokes on his family and friends and spending time with his grandchild­ren. He was a Christian and loved his Lord and Savior.

Survivors include: His wife of 30 years, Linda Mangrum; two daughters, Kathy White and Rosanna (Tommy) Mize; two sons, Calvin (Darlene) Stanton and Lucas Mangrum; eight grandchild­ren, nine great-grandchild­ren, one cousin and several nieces and nephews.

Roy Lee Coker, 89, Peavine

Roy Lee “Buck” Coker, of the Peavine community, Ga., died Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at his residence. He was 89.

Buck was a lifelong resident of the Burning Bush and Peavine communitie­s and was a member of Peavine Baptist Church.

He worked in the milk hauling business for over 30 years. He began hauling milk in cans and later went to a tanker truck. He continued in the trucking business until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Louise Barnes Coker; his son, Danny Lee and grandson Jason Coker; his parents, Dewey and Ella Mae Coker; sister, Garnie Lou and brother, Charles.

Bronick “Ronnie” Harwood, of Rossville, Ga., passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at his residence. He was 68.

Ronnie was a native of Henagar, Ala., and retired from U.S. Pipe following 28 years of service.

Ronald Lee Andrews, 71, Chattanoog­a

Ronald Lee “Ronnie” Andrews, of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, in a local hospital. He was 71.

Mr. Andrews was a native and lifelong resident of North Georgia and Chattanoog­a and was a 1963 graduate of Lakeview High School.

He served his country with the U.S. Marine Corp during Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Postal Service following 26 years of service.

Mr. Andrews was a Christian and a member of the D.A.V.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Freddie Beatrice Andrews and sister, Regina Daniels.

Survivors include: His wife of 49 years, Ilene Andrews; daughters, Shannan Andrews (James Larry Wilburn) and Lea (Jeff) Baker; grandchild­ren, Shelby Rogers, Jeremy Wilburn and Joshua Wilburn; great-grandchild­ren, Hayley Grace Lea Rogers, Addison Joy Rogers and Noah James Wilburn and nephew, Jeff Daniels.

Margaret Cordelia Thompson, 76, Fort Oglethorpe

Margaret Cordelia Thompson, of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was 76.

Mrs. Thompson, a native of Fyffe, Ala., was born Jan. 11, 1940, to the late Elmos Ozelle and Ruthie Lee Brown.

After she married the love of her life, William A. Thompson, she later moved to the North Georgia area and spent the past 60 years in Fort Oglethorpe. She was employed with Peerless-Woolen Mills and Southern Industrial Fabrics as a machine operator. She enjoyed crocheting, planting flowers, working in her garden and was known for having a green thumb. She also loved her dogs and cats.

Mrs. Thompson was a loving, thoughtful and caring person who will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William A. Thompson; parents, Elmos Ozelle and Ruthie Lee Brown; daughter, Deborah Jean Thompson, brothers, William Gary Brown and Merrill Douglas Brown and sister, Louise Pike.

Survivors include: Her brother, Elmos Junior “E.J.” Brown; son, Michael Wayne Thompson; daughters, Beverly Wilbanks and Carol (Anthony) Steele; four grandchild­ren and two great-grandchild­ren.

The family would like to thank Connie Vaughan for being a special friend and caregiver for Mrs. Thompson for the past year.

William Arthur “Bill” Shoemaker, of LaFayette, Ga., and formerly of Naples, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, at Pruitt Health Care Center.

He was born in Walker County, Ga., son of the late Junice Shoemaker and Una Powell Shoemaker. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Beasley Shoemaker.

He was retired from the City of Naples Water Department.

Survivors include: His sister, Katherine Shoemaker Stevenson of LaFayette and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Kevin Michael Motley, 25, Trion

Kevin Michael Motley, of Trion, Ga., died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, at Kindred Hospital with his family by his side. He was 25.

Mr. Motley was born Aug. 20, 1991, in Chattanoog­a, Tenn., son of Donald Howard Motley and Shirley Louise Wooten.

William Homer Bridges Jr., Ringgold

William Homer Bridges Jr., of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, he was a retired employee of Queen Carpet where he worked for over 25 years.

Junior attended Shattuck Boulevard Church of Christ in LaFayette and enjoyed going to Motley’s in Tunnel Hill on Friday and Saturday nights.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Pettyjohn Bridges; parents, William Homer Bridges Sr. and Pearl Lorrine Hullender Bridges; daughter, Leisa Proctor; three sisters, Inez Ogle, Sara Walraven and Hilda Gordy and two brothers, Jimmy and Johnny Bridges.

Sherri Lynne Roberts, of Rossville, Ga., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016. She was 57.

She was a member of East Ridge Church of The Nazarene and was very proud to have been an LPN for many years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Colquitt Waldron and grandmothe­r, Flora Colquitt.

Larry Estes Howell, 64, LaFayette

Larry Estes Howell, of LaFayette, Ga., passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at his residence. He was 64.

He was born Nov. 9, 1952, in Sylva, N. C., and attended Cove Road Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Howell and Hester Bryson Howell; stepmother, Pearl Howell; brothers, Leon, H.L., Louie, Johnny and Glenn Howell; sisters, Edith, Lillie Jo and Annie Ruth Howell; sister-in-law, Frances Turner; brother-in-law, Clarence Turner; motherin-law, Rosie Upshaw and fathers-in-law, Clifford Upshaw and J.T. Turner Sr.

Wilma Lucille Coker, of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., (formerly of LaFayette) passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016. She was 92.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Coker.

Charlotte Ann Lively, 72, LaFayette

Charlotte Ann Lively, of LaFayette, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was 72.

She was of the Pentecosta­l faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louie Larman and Clara Potter Larman.

Survivors include: Her husband of 56 years, Allen Lively; daughter, Anissa Collins of Chickamaug­a, Ga.; sons, Al (Jan) Lively, Ben (Angelia) Lively, Roy (Carrie) Lively and James (Crystal) Lively all of LaFayette; 10 grandchild­ren, six great-grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Thursday, Dec. 29, from 6- 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside service: Friday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. at LaFayette City Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Chambers officiatin­g.

John Roland Brown, 69, Ringgold

John Roland Brown, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2016. He was 69.

A native of Raeford, N.C., he lived in the Ringgold area for the past year and was formerly of Charlotte, N.C.

He was a graduate of Hoke County High School and was a former employee of BakerMitch­ell where he worked for five years in sales.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Duncan Brown Sr., and Delphia Parker Brown and grandparen­ts, Dr. George Washington Brown and Lola Brown.

Survivors include: Two brothers, Walter D. brown Jr. of Cohutta, Ga., and George (Annette) Parker Brown of Raeford, N.C., and cousins, Bill Brown, Cathy Brown, Hubert Wooten, Wayne Wooten and Delrose Morrison.
