Middle School School Basketball: Eagles hold on to trip Bulldogs

- By Scott Herpst

A wild back-andforth affair that also included a 15-minute delay when the lights went out saw the Chattanooga Valley Eagles hold off Rossville, 29-27, in a backyard battle this past Tuesday in Rossville.

The contest saw neither team take more than a five-point lead. Rossville guard Zack Harrison hit the only field goal in the first six minutes of the first quarter - a 3-pointer, before Noah Smith finally got the Eagles on the board with an oldfashioned 3-point play with 40 seconds left in the period.

The second quarter would see three more lead changes before Rossville’s Corey Reagan tied things up at 10 on an offensive put-back with 1:06 left before halftime.

Then, just moments after Reagan’s bucket, Amarreon Turner made a steal in Rossville’s frontcourt and headed down the floor. Suddenly, most of the lights over the court went out as Turner went in for a lay-up to give CVMS the lead with 52 seconds to play.

The game was delayed as the two teams waited for the lights to come back on and once they did, the Eagles would add a late free throw to take a 1310 lead into the locker room.

CVMS would stretch out their lead to 18-13 midway through the third quarter, only to see Rossville tie it as Harrison hit a three and drove for a lay-up with less than 20 seconds remaining in the period.

The fourth quarter would be a thriller as five lead changes and five ties had fans on the edge of their seats. King Mason came up with a steal and lay-up with 1:12 to go, accounting for what would turn out to be the final points of the game, but the outcome was far from settled.

Both teams turned it over two times each in the next 50 seconds and the Bulldogs missed two shots in the paint in the waning seconds before Turner was able to grab a rebound and draw a foul with 5.2 second to play.

He would miss the front end of the oneand-one, but the Eagles would able to come away with the loose ball after a battle for the rebound and run out the clock before Rossville could put the Eagles back on the line.

Kobe Lewis led CVMS with eight points, followed by Jeremiah Turner with seven and Jordan McLin with five.

Harrison hit five 3-pointers and ended the night with 15 points for the Bulldogs. Reagan and Tommy Lamb finished with four points each.
