Three Trojans win area wrestling titles, eight headed to sectionals in Rome
The Gordon Lee Mat Trojans, who had to settle for third place in the Area 3-A Duals a few weeks ago, took home some hardware from the Area 3-A Traditional tournament at Mt. Zion-Carroll on Saturday.
Gordon Lee finished second in the team standings to claim the runner-up trophy. Trion won the area title and the host Eagles placed third.
Three Trojans will go on to the Class A state sectionals at Darlington next weekend as area champions. Hunter Burnette won the title at 106. Jarrett Lassetter won it at 160 and Braden Jarvis claimed the crown at 170.
Tucker Miller (113) and Zach Murdock (152) each placed second. Jasper Wilson (120) and Caleb Vines (195) were both third, while Avery Geer (126) battled back for fourth.
Hunter Hartman (138) and Gavin Graham (145) will be state alternates after fifth-place showings. Caiden Scroggins (132) finished sixth.
Wrestlers who advance from the sectionals will move on to the state finals, which will be held Feb. 9-11 at the Macon Coliesum.
Classes 4A-7A, which have 16man brackets per weight class, will begin the state finals on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. Classes 1A, 2A and 3A (eight-man brackets) will begin with the quarterfinal round on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Semifinals for Classes 1A-3A will begin at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10, followed by Classes 4A and 5A at 4 and the rest of the classes at 5:30.
Finals in all classes start at 3 p.m. on Feb. 11.
