Lady Trojans bolster region tournament hopes with subregion road victories

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans faced one of their toughest single weeks of the season last week, and while the Lady Trojans weren’t able to win them all, they were able to pick up two important road victories to bolster their chances of making the Region 6-A tournament.

The Lady Tigers used a 15-5 run in the second quarter last Tuesday to grab a 25-15 lead at intermission and they enjoyed a nine-point cushion entering the fourth.

But Molly Thomison would score 10 of her 18 points in the final period to lead the Lady Trojans back. They would outscore Darlington, 15-6, over the final eight minutes to regulation to tie the game at 47 and send it to overtime. However, the Lady Tigers would win the extra period, 5-3, to escape Chickamauga and avoid their first subregion loss of the season.

Abby Dalton had nine points for Gordon Lee, while Katelyn O’Toole finished with seven points.

The Lady Trojans put the disappointment of the Darlington game behind them and took down the No. 2 team in Region 6-A “A” on Friday night as they dispatched the Lady Eagles in Cartersville.

Gracie O’Neal had 16 points in the win, followed by Dalton with nine and Thomison with eight.

The Lady Trojans took a half-game lead for second place in the subregion as they secured another huge road victory less than 24 hours after beating Excel.

Bowdon led 16-6 after the first quarter, but the Lady Trojans would finally get their legs underneath them once the second quarter began.

They chopped the lead down to 22-20 by halftime and pulled away in the third as they outscored the Lady Red Devils, 15-2.

Gordon Lee (1310 overall, 8-4 in subregion) got 14 points from Dalton and 13 from Thomison, who connected on 10-of-14 free throws.

Lexie Clark finished with eight points and O’Neal dropped in seven.

The Lady Trojans will host Mt. Zion and North Cobb Christian next week to end the regular season.

The Region 6-A tournament will be held at Darlington, beginning on Feb. 6.

Only the top four teams in each of the two subregions in Region 6 will advance to the region tournament.

The Class A state brackets will ultimately be filled by power rankings.
