Lady Trojans grab subregion’s No. 2 seed

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans will be playing in the Region 6-A Tournament in Darlington on Tuesday.

The Navy-and-White will face Fellowship Christian at 6 p.m. with the winner to take on either Excel Christian or St. Francis in the semifinals.

Only the top four teams in each of 6-A’s two subregions advanced to the region tournament. The tournament champion will earn an automatic invite to either the Class A Private School or Class A Public School state tournament, while the rest of the 24-team brackets will be filled out by the GHSA’s power rankings system for Class A.

The Lady Trojans stormed out to a 21-2 lead on the visiting Lady Eagles last Tuesday before cruising to the win.

A total of 10 different players scored for the Lady Trojans led by 10 from Abby Dalton, nine from Faith Alexander and seven from Lexie Clark.

The Lady Trojans made it seven wins in their last eight games after handling the Lady Eagles in Chickamauga.

Gordon Lee led 29-18 at halftime and stretched their advantage out to 41-24 to start the fourth quarter.

Molly Thomison had 15 points for Gordon Lee (15-10 overall, 10-4 subregion), followed by Dalton and Gracie O’Neal with nine each.

Last Tuesday’s nightcap saw the Trojans once again take it to one of the subregion’s better squads, only to run out of steam in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles led 32-29 at halftime and held a 46-40 lead going into the fourth quarter before pulling away in the final eight minutes.

Kannen Derryberry scored a team-high 13 for the Trojans. Jack Solmon had 11 points and four rebounds. Hayden Murphy finished with nine points and Jacob Dyer added six points and grabbed nine rebounds.

As has been their custom for most of the season, the Trojans put up a fight, this time against one of the top Class A private school teams in the state.

However, the Eagles from Marietta - who led by just six points, 27-21, at halftime, pulled away in the second half to win going away.

Justin Wooden had 10 points for the Trojans, followed by Derryberry with five.

The Trojans (7-18, 3-11) did not finish in the top four of the subregion and will not play in the region tournament. They will most likely miss the state tournament as they were ranked 43rd in the most recent power rankings.

“The kids gave it everything they had this year,” head coach Alex Disbrow said. “We were outmanned most nights, whether we were dealing with injuries or whether it was just youth. But I’m proud of them and I’m proud to be their coach. I can’t wait to take all of these learning lessons we got this year and put them to use next year.”
