Chattanooga to celebrate 40th anniversary of 1977 DII National Champions
The Chattanooga Mocs complete a busy stretch of three on the road over a week’s time Wednesday at VMI. They return to McKenzie Arena Saturday hosting ETSU and celebrating a very special group.
It’s the 40th anniversary of the 1977 NCAA Division II National Champions. Several members of the team, support staff and administration will be in town for the weekend and remembered at halftime of the showdown with the Bucs.
“It’s ironic,” Coach Matt McCall began. “We had our 10-year reunion from our national championship (at Florida) this fall. There was no way I was missing that because when you’re able to experience something like that, you’re always tied to that school and community in such a positive way.
“We’ve always said it’s not about the materialistic things that comes with a championship...it’s about the relationships you create along the way. Those relationships last a lifetime.
“To be able to bring back that this week is huge for our players, fans and school to see because it was obviously a very special time for our program and community.”
There are several giveaways and promotions tied to the contest. A commemorative t-shirt mirroring the look of the 1977 National Champs jersey will be distributed and all fans are encouraged to wear white for the “White Out” promotion.
Campus-wise, one lucky student will be randomly selected to take a half-court shot for $5,000. There is also a contest for the loudest and rowdiest Greek organization.
General admission tickets are $5 and kids who come to the game in their youth-league jersey are admitted free with paying adult. Those specials are for both of the remaining home games including Fan Appreciation game on Feb. 25 against Mercer.
Fans can submit photos for a special mosaic added to the Power C at center court. Submit your photos showing your Mocs pride on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #ReptheC. Fans can also email GoMocsMarketing@ gmail.com.
