LHS hoopsters visit elementary schools
When a group of LaFayette High School basketball players recently arrived at their feeder elementary schools, they were welcomed not only as esteemed high school students, but as elite basketball players and local celebrities.
But the excitement was not limited to the younger students. The high school basketball players — both boys and girls — enjoyed visiting the hallways of schools that they once walked as elementary school students.
LHS basketball coaches Hank Peppers and Holly Rhudy worked together with Mission Support Specialist Julie Portwood to organize the visits. The players read books in various classrooms and helped with math tutoring and vocabulary sight words.
While the basketball players initially felt out of their comfort zone and a little nervous, the charm of the elementary school students quickly won their hearts and they proved to be of help to the elementary school teachers as well.
These visits allowed the high school players to relive the nostalgia of their younger years and also helped connect future Ramblers with real-life high school students in order to cast a vision of where their educational path might lead them as they pursue their goals of graduation in order to be ready for college, work, and life.
