Trojans stumble against Generals, Catamounts

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Trojans entered last week as the state’s No. 1-ranked Class A team in the Public School division, but that may change this week as the Trojans won just one of their three games last week, although two of the losses came to much bigger schools.

Heritage 9, Gordon Lee 3

On Thursday, the Trojans welcomed Class AAAA No. 10-ranked Heritage to Chickamauga in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but postponed by rain.

However, the extra two days didn’t help Gordon Lee’s cause as the Generals led 4-0 after the top of the third inning and extended their advantage to 6-1 after four.

Gordon Lee would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but a big two-run double by Heritage’s Joseph Hill in the top of the seventh would help seal the victory.

Tripp Church picked up the win for the Generals on the hill. Chaney Rogers gave up two unearned runs on a hit and two walks. He finished with four strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss. Jake Wright, Hunter Hodson and Kobie Cowan all threw innings in relief.

Heritage collected 10 hits, including a homerun by Josh Gibson.

Rogers and Dylan Minghini each had two of the six hits by the Trojans. Rogers had a double, while Noah Peterson drove in a run with a triple. Rogers and Mason Pettigrew had the other RBIs for Gordon Lee.

Dalton 5, Gordon Lee 2

The Trojans trailed 3-0 after three innings in Dalton on Saturday, plated two runs in the fourth to tighten up the game, but allowed two more in the sixth to the stillunbeaten Catamounts of Class AAAAAA.

Ethan Clark doubled and Caleb Hopkins had the only RBI for the Trojans.

Clark started the game and threw two innings of four-hit ball, allowing one earned run and fanning one. Mason Pettigrew threw two innings in taking the loss. He gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Cole Tarvin allowed one hit and struck out three as he worked the final two innings.

Gordon Lee 12, Coahulla Creek 2

In Saturday’s second game, the Trojans scored six runs in the top of the second before going on to the win over the Class AAA Colts. Rogers and Peterson each had two hits and drove in three runs, while Pettigrew was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cowan knocked in two runs, while Minghini, Justin Wooden and Hunter Hodson each had one RBI.

Austin Thompson started the game, while he, along with Hopkins, Jake Wright and Will Sizemore, combined to allow eight hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Wright, who pitched the fourth, was the pitcher of record and scored the victory.

Gordon Lee (4-2) will open Region 6-A play on Tuesday when they travel to Trion for a 5 p.m. game. They are slated to host the Bulldogs on Thursday at 5 before facing Heritage Saturday at 4 p.m. at AT&T Field in Chattanooga.
