GLHS girls place fifth at Southeast

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans track team got a pair of first place medals and finished a very respectabl­e fifth in the 12-team Southeast Whitfield Invitation­al on Saturday.

Heritage collected 114.5 points to take the top spot, followed by Dalton with 100.5 points. Gilmer (68.5), Calhoun (63.5) and Gordon Lee (54.5) rounded out the top five.

Senior Addison Whitman cleared 8-feet to win the pole vault, while freshman Gracie O’Neal was first in the 800 meters (2:36). Riley Cash was second in the 800 (2:45), while the 4x400 relay team also earned the runner-up spot (4:35). Gracey Kruse

at 73. Carter Grant fired a 76 and Matthew Ingram came in at 77 to round out the team score. Riley Grant (82) and Zack Whittle (92) also teed it up for the Ramblers.

“As the weather heated up today, all the guys’ games started heating up,” Langford added. “Gage was 3-over at one point today and finished at even-par. Cole was 3-over early, but chipped in for eagle at No. 7 and held his round together.

“Matthew has always been a warm weather golfer and he proved that again today and Carter shot 33 on the back nine after a 43 on the front nine. Without that, we might not be having this conversati­on.”

FPD was the only other school to post four scores in the 70’s. They were led by Wesley Hanson, who earned a spot on the five-man All-Tournament Team, along with Smith and Ingram. The other two spots went to low medalist Harrison Davis of Ft. Payne (71) and his teammate Dawson Garrett (74).

Gordon Lee, who hopes to have sophomore Tucker Windham back in the lineup soon, was fourth with a 317. Justin Hickman paced the Trojans with a 3-over 75, followed by Gray Weldon (79), Jacob Carlock (81) and Tucker Graham (84). Christian Boyd (95) and Cole Walker (99) also played for the Navy-and-White.

LaFayette’s “B” team was eighth with a 349. Jon Morgan led the way with an 84, followed by Tyler Jackson (86), Mason Cain (89) and Jon Durham (90). Kyle Moore (96) and Josh Bettis (100) also played, while Grant Langford played as an unattached player and shot a solid 83.

LaFayette boys beat Gordon Lee

The Ramblers and Trojans opened the 2017 season last Thursday with an 18-hole match at the LaFayette Golf Course.

Cole Ingram fired a 2-under par 70 and Smith finished at 1-under with a 71 as the Ramblers posted a 302. Riley Grant’s 80 and Carter Grant’s 81 rounded out the team score. Morgan shot an 84 for the Ramblers, while Jackson finished with an 88.

Gordon Lee got a 75 from Hickman as the Navy-and-White finished at 350. Carlock carded an 87, followed by Weldon’s 89 and Boyd’s 99. Walker (103), Ethan Teague (105) and Graham (106) also played for the Trojans.

LaFayette’s junior varsity squad shot a 353 behind an 83 from Whittle, an 84 from Matthew Ingram, a 92 from Durham and a 94 from Cain. Bettis ended the day with an even 100.

In girls’ action, Gordon Lee got a 38 from Macall Miller to help beat the Lady Ramblers, 130-153.

Hannah Willerson and Jessica Hickman each shot a 46 for the Lady Trojans.

Catie Martin paced LaFayette with a 50, followed by Rebecca Benson’s 51 and Maci Johnson’s 52.

Gavin Noble shot a 36 this past Thursday, including a chip-in eagle on No. 4, and the Ringgold High School boys’ golf team opened the 2017 schedule with a team score of 183 for nine holes at Windstone.

Joseph Taylor added a 41 for the Blue-andWhite, followed by a 52 from Nick Loboda and a 54 from Jerin Morgan.

Ridgeland got a 58 from Tristan Burks and a 61 from Justin Carver, but the Panthers did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

On the girls’ side, Miranda Rich was low medalist with a sparkling 37 for Ringgold, while Christa Parrish fired a 53 for the Lady Panthers.
