High soccer teams battle rivals as regular season begins to wind down

- By Robert Magobet

The LakeviewFort Oglethorpe Lady Warriors continue to click on all cylinders.

With a 2-1 home win over the LaFayette Lady Ramblers this past Wednesday, LFO improved to 6-8 overall. The Red-and-White have now won three straight and five of their last seven after beginning the season 1-6.

Both Sydney Moss and Chelsey Lyndsey scored late goals to help LFO pull off the victory.

Solidifying a phenomenal defensive effort, Rebecca Leggett was able to make seven saves, while defenders Alyssa Leverrett, Deandra Rowe and Melina Fazlic were able to neutralize the Lady Rambler offense to the tune of one goal.

Bailey Tarvin scored for LaFayette off an assist from Kailee Queen.

The concerted defensive effort from the Lady Warriors dropped the Lady Ramblers to 3-5 on the year.

After failing to score against North Murray there days earlier, the Warriors turned the tables around with a win over the Ramblers on Friday evening in Fort Oglethorpe.

The win put the Warriors at 3-12 overall.

Warrior coach Nicholas Dunn said this win was much needed, and is hopeful this victory will kindle a burning desire to put a string of wins together before the season ends in just a few weeks.

“It was huge for us; we only have two more games left and they are non-region games,” Dunn said. “And hopefully—one of them is in the county—that

will lead to a good win.”

Leading their team to victory was Bryan Castro and Jasson Ticas who both had a goal each. Castro scored in the first 12 minutes of regulation, while Ticas scored his goal in the second half.

“The first score by Castro was huge inside the box,” Dunn said. “And then Jason had a nice score right outside the box.”

Goals, of course, are all fine and dandy, but they wouldn’t transpire without the player who sets their teammates up for success. Goals generated were assisted by Armando Martinez and Ethan Wofford.

Overall, the Warriors engendered 10 shots on goal.

On the flip side, LFO only gave up one goal, which was scored by LaFayette’s Austin

McKin. A large part of that was because of Warrior goalkeeper Braxton Jones, who had seven saves.

“This is his first year for Braxton Jones,” Dunn said. “He’s a football kid that came out just to help me out. This was his first game in the goal. He had a great night in the goal.”

The regular season for LFO will conclude on Tuesday, April 11 against Ridgeland.

The Lady Generals led 4-0 at halftime, tacked on two quick goals to begin the second half and rolled to a shutout win at Ridgeland in a Region 6-AAAA match on Thursday.

Caylee Carpenter had three goals and an assist for the Lady Generals (8-3, 4-2). Anna Boley and Brianna Smotherman each scored twice, while

Smotherman had one assist.

Jillian Roberts and Finley Brisendine both had a goal and an assist. Sarah Hall assisted on two goals, while Sydney Rogers added one assist.

Morgan Crawford had 26 saves for the depleted Lady Panthers (1-9, 0-5), who had just one available substitute on the bench due to illness.

In the boys’ match, Heritage led 3-1 with five minutes left in the opening half when the match was halted and later suspended by lightning.

Ethan Demo scored two of the Generals’ goals and collected on assist. Jameson Wright had a goal and an assist and Josh Cook also had an assist.

Juan Valazquez was responsible for the Panthers’ lone goal.

The boys’ match will resume on April 17 at 6 p.m.
