Panthers win four-team meet at LaFayette

Led by big nights from 2016 Walker County Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year Marquie Davis and 2016 and 2017 Walker County Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year Gabe Ashley, the Ridgeland Panthers collected 87 points and held off Chattooga (80.5) to win a fourteam meet at LaFayette last Tuesday.

The host Ramblers finished with 38.5 points, while Heritage finished fourth with 27 points.

Davis won three events, the high jump (5-8), the 100 meters (10.84) and the 110-meter high hurdles (14.86), while Ashley cruised to wins in the 1600 (5:06) and the 3200 (11:38).

Quintin Postell won the shot put (42-7) and Gavin Losh raced to a win in the 300 hurdles (45.25) for Ridgeland.

Chattooga won five events. Jamarious Mosteller claimed victory in the 400 (54.85) and the 800 (2:21). Issac Foster won the 200 (23.82), while the 4x100 (44.25) and 4x400 (3:54) teams also took first place.

LaFayette’s lone win was turned in by Dakota Cathey, who won the long jump with a mark of 20-4.

Heritage won the other two events. Ryan Carter won the triple jump (40-0), while Zach Scott set a personal record of 117-10 in the discus.

On the girls’ side, the home team amassed 82 points to win the meet, followed by Chattooga (67), Ridgeland (47) and Heritage (12).

Winning events for LaFayette were Dominique Southern in the triple jump (28-10), Kelsie Burrows in the high jump (44), Rachel Graham in the 400 (1:06.63) and the 800 (3:04) and Hannah Dearing in the 1600 (7:02) and the 3200 (15:22).

Chattooga’s wins were turned in by Ziyah Underwood in the long jump (14-8), Konstance Knox in the shot put (30-8 1/2), Taylor Melton in the 300 hurdles (58.31) and the 4x100 (53.39) and 4x400 (4:52) relays teams.

The other events were all won by the Lady Panthers. Jazzmyn Shelton took first in both the 100 (13.26) and the 200 (28.22). Amaya Harrington won the 100 hurdles (18.09) and Hailey Bryant won the discus (87-3 1/2).
