Northwest sweeps three region games from LaFayette

The Northwest Whitfield Bruins maintained their one-game lead on Heritage in the Region 6-AAAA standings after sweeping a threegame series from the LaFayette Ramblers last week.

The Bruins (17-8 overall) will begin the final week of the regular season with a 13-2 region mark, while the Generals are a game back at 12-3. second and one more in the third to tie up the game.

Northwest retook the lead with a solo run in the top of the fourth, but LaFayette would threaten to go back in front in the bottom of the fifth.

Singles by Jack Martin and Chase Smith and a Stephenson walk loaded the bases with two outs. Andrew Ashe entered the game for the Bruins to replace starter David Ramirez and got a big strikeout to end the inning and leave the sacks full.

However, Northwest would blow the game open in the next two innings, scoring four times in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put it away.

Ramirez would pick up the victory, while Jack Brock collected three RBIs for the Bruins.

Logan Teasley had a double as one of his two hits and he finished with two RBIs. Martin and Guffey each finished with two hits. Ty Fisher had a double and drove in a run, while Brady Anderson finished with one RBI.

Fisher went 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing seven runs - three earned - on six hits and five walks. He finished the evening with two strikeouts.

Northwest 10, LaFayette 1

In Friday’s nightcap, the Bruins led 2-1 after four complete innings, but erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth. They added a solo run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Hank Bearden collected the win for the Bruins, while Sebastian Orozco had three RBIs in the victory.

Stephenson was saddled with the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Stephenson, Guffey and Chase Smith had the only hits for LaFayette, all singles. Guffey had the lone RBI, driving in Teasley in the fourth.

LaFayette (8-19, 3-12) will close out the season next week with three games against Heritage, while the Bruins will take on Ridgeland.
