Middle School Baseball: Trojans keep rolling

The Gordon Lee Trojans got four strikeouts from starting pitcher Brody Cobb and two more each from relievers Austin Daniel and Grayson Smith in a 9-3 home win over Rossville on Thursday.

The game did not count in the NGAC standings.

Jake Poindexter went 2-for-4 with a walk, while Cobb, Cade Peterson, Jacob Neal and Cody Thomas each added one hit on the day. Cobb recorded the win on the mound.

Individual statistics for Rossville were not provided as of press time.

Peterson paced the offensive surge by going 4-for-4 at the plate. Poindexter went 3-for-3 and drove in a run. Neal, Henry Ellis and Jackson Moore were all 2-for-4, while Grayson Smith and Dylan Burnett each had one hit.

Poindexter got the win on the mound.

Trojans win inaugural Walker County Cup

The Walker County contingent of the NGAC converged on Jay Smith Field at Ridgeland High School on Saturday to compete for the firstever Walker County Cup.

And when the dust had settled it was the Navy-and-White who emerged victorious.

Gordon Lee won its two games by a combined score of 28-4 to take home the cup.

The Trojans scored an 11-2 win over Chattanoog­a Valley in the semifinals.

Neal and Peterson had two hits each, while Cobb was 1-for-1 with a walk.

In the finals, Poindexter went 4-for4 and Peterson went 3-for-4 in a 17-2 victory over LaFayette. Moore, Cobb, Logan Simerely, Tanner Wilson and Will Carswell all hit safely in the game.

Trion 5, LaFayette 4

The Bulldogs put up four runs in the top of the seventh inning and stole a win over the Ramblers in south Walker County last Tuesday.

Rambler starter Davis Richardson went the first five innings for the home team, striking out nine, walking five and allowing just one earned run on one hit.

Cade Fisher took over the in the sixth with a 3-1 advantage when the Bulldogs rallied to take a 5-3 lead on three singles and three walks.

LaFayette had comeback thoughts of its own in the last of the seventh. The Ramblers loaded the bases for Hunter Deal, who brought in Richardson on a sacrifice fly. But with two outs and runners at first and second, the game would end on a ground out to shortstop.

Trion’s initial run of the game came in the top of the first on a LaFayette error. The Ramblers’ first three runs all came in the third.

Two runs scored on a RBI-double by

(30.22). St. John took first in the 1600 (6:43), while the 4x400 team also claimed victory (4:43).

Gordon Lee countered with wins by Sturdivant in the high jump (4-9), the 100 hurdles (17.59) and the 400 (1:04.39). Lee took first in the shot put (278½) and the discus (85-5), while the 4x100 relay team (57.06) also crossed the line in first.

The Trojans put on another dominant performanc­e in the boys’ meet, capturing 11 of 12 events and winning first place with 78 points. Heritage (35.5) was distant second, while Lakeview (12) took third.

Lee won the 800 (2:20.70) and the 1600 (5:23), while Collins claimed first-place points in the 100 (12.22)

and the 200 (25.63).

Other wins for the Trojans came from Logan Butler in the discus (96-1), Garrett Morton in the shot put (38-8½), Jacobs in the long jump (17-2½), Peco in the 100 hurdles (18.25), Eldridge in the 400 (1:02.31), the 4x100 relay team (50.00) and the 4x400 relay team (4:17).

Owens won the high jump (5-6) for the Generals.

Ringgold sweeps at home

The Tigers and Lady Tigers led the way in a four-team home meet on Thursday.

Ringgold’s girls amassed 85 points on the strength of seven individual event victories to take first place over LaFayette (59), Saddle Ridge (37) and Rossville (2).

Haynie Gilstrap won both the 800 (2:58.02)

and the 1600 (6:23) for Saddle Ridge, while Madi Ashley took first in the shot put (26-7 1/2).

Jadiah Smith won the discus (62-10 1/2) for LaFayette, while Sarah Ray took high jump honors (4-4) for the Lady Ramblers.

On the boys’ side, the Tigers had the will to win as they secured eight individual victories and the team win with 88 points. LaFayette, who won three times, was second with 70 points. Rossville was third with 15, while Saddle Ridge finished with 11 and claimed one event win.

Lukas Dierking won twice for the Ramblers, taking first in the 200 (26.31) and in the 400 (1:01.78). The 4x100 relay team also won with a time of 51 seconds flat.

For Saddle Ridge, Joshua Perea crossed the line first in the 1600 (5:45.57).
