Middle School Track: Heritage girls edge out Chattanooga Valley for meet win

- By Scott Herpst

In a meet that saw Chattanooga Valley and Heritage exchange the lead seven times in 12 events, the home team was able to pull out a win by just one halfpoint in a four-team NGAC league meet at Heritage last Tuesday.

The Lady Generals won four events and finished with 70.5 points, edging out the Lady Eagles (70 points) on the very last race of the day. Gordon Lee (41.5) was third and Lakeview (3) was a distant fourth.

Chattanooga Valley led 68-64.5 going into the final event of the night, the 4x400 relay. But the Lady Generals “A” team would win in a time of 4:47.71 to earn six points. Gordon Lee “A” took second and three points, while the two points the Lady Eagles got for third place was not enough to hold on to the lead.

Kaylan Davis won both the long jump (1310) and the 800 (2:48.95) for Heritage, while Sydnee St. John took first in the high jump (4-8).

Chattanooga Valley also came up four event wins. Cordasia Watkins swept the 100 (13.91) and the 200 (28.68). Maggie Dickson won the 1600 (6:12) and the 4x100 “A” relay team won in a time of 57.25 seconds.

The other four wins were turned in by Gordon Lee. Addison Sturdivant won the 100 hurdles (17.9) and the 400 (1:05.87), while Arilyn Lee swept the discus (84-6) and the shot put (27-8).

The boys’ match did not have nearly as much drama as the Trojans won eight of 12 events, setting a school-record in the process, as they cruised to the victory with 88.5 points.

Heritage won three events and finished with 62.5 points. Chattanooga Valley won once and collected 29 points, while Lakeview rounded out the scoring with four points.

The school-record came in the 4x100 relay, where Ryan Eldridge, Kameron Oliver, Brady Jacobs and Griffin Collins blistered the track in 49.15 seconds.

Oliver also won the 400 in 59.25. Collins claimed a win in the 200 (25.22) and Jacobs won the long jump (17-9½).

Anthony Peco won the 100 hurdles (18.87). Jake Lee won twice, scoring firstplace points in the 800 (2:26.87) and the 1600 (5:21) and the Trojans closed it out with a win in the 4x400 (4:16.41).

Heritage’s wins were turned in by Jonathan Washburn in the shot put (36-0, Eli Owens in the high jump (5-4) and Zack Brown in the discus (102-0).

Jeremiah Turner claimed victory in the 100 for the Eagles, winning in a time of 12.25.

Heritage girls, Gordon Lee boys win on Thursday

In a three-team meet in Chickamauga, the Lady Generals and Lady Trojans each won six events, but Heritage would get a few more placement points to beat Gordon Lee, 64-53, while Lakeview finished up with nine points.

Wins for the Lady Generals came from Davis in the long jump (13-9½) and the 800 (2:57.16), while Emily Woody won both the 100 (14.06) and the 200

Richardson that plated Fisher and Blake Mann. Richardson later scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Skylar Cepeda.

LaFayette 5, Chattanooga Valley 4

The Ramblers built a 4-1 after three innings on Thursday, but had to stave off a furious rally by the Eagles to claim a victory in Flintstone.

Cepeda worked five innings to get the win, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Deal would pitch 1 2/3 of an inning, giving up three runs – two earned – with two walks and five strikeouts. Fisher struck out the final hitter of the game with the bases loaded to record the one-out save. LaFayette struck for four runs in the top of the third. A dropped third strike and backto-back walks would set the table and the first run would score on an Ethan Adams sacrifice fly.

After a Dylan Deering one-out single reloaded the bases, Zach Sharp drew a walk to plate Fisher and a Carson Jenkins liner would bring in Adams and Deering.

Nolan Hughley singled in Chris Maddeaux in the home half of third, but the Ramblers would get the run right back in the fourth on a double by Fisher that scored Preston Alexander.

However, CVMS would make things very interesting in their last at-bat. Amarreon Turner would double and score on Hughley’s sacrifice fly and two straight LaFayette errors allowed two runs to score and kept things going for the Eagles.

Another error, this one following a dropped third strike, and a walk would load the bases once more. However, Fisher would enter the game with two outs and finally slammed the door shut on the comeback attempt.

Adams go 2-for-3 with a triple, while Fisher was 1-for-2 with a single, two walks and a RBI.

Individual statistics for the Eagles were not provided as of press time.
