Metamorphosis of West LaFayette?
West LaFayette is gearing up for a makeover that could transform it into a greener, more walkable and bike-friendly place.
LaFayette welcomed Southface, an Atlanta nonprofit that helps develop sustainable solutions for business developing properties. Southface presented plans to develop a multi-purpose bike trail, connecting pocket parks and walking trails around the city in a three-mile radius, as well as adding trees and sidewalks to Villinow and West Main streets, just to name a few ideas.
This was Southface’s third meeting in the city. Citizens were able to offer insight into what they would like to see as positive growth in the West LaFayette area.
The most recent meeting was held at Gilbert Elementary School.
Austin Robinson, of Southface, discussed how the bike trails would also allow for safer access to children riding their bikes to Gilbert Elementary.
Greg Ramsey, also of Southface, discussed how the proposed multi-use trails would link the downtown square to the arts district as well as creating and conserving already existing greenways that would tie together with pocket parks throughout the city.
Property developer Matt Monroe, of Rea Ventures Group of Atlanta, discussed building cottage-style duplexes, townhouses as well as a community center within the city.
Monroe said there are state-funded weatherization grants available to lowincome households to assist energy efficiency.
