Jermiah Conyers heading west

The Ridgeland Panthers football program added another name to its ever-growing list of college signees on Wednesday when senior Jermiah Conyers signed on to continue her playing career at Dodge City Community College in Kansas.

The 5-foot-11, 240-pounder did a little of everything for the Black-and-White in the past four seasons. He was primarily a defensive tackle as a senior, collecting 10 tackles and 16 assists for the Region 6-AAAA champions.

“It’s a big opportunity for me because they are really the only school that believed in me,” Conyers said of the Conquistadors. “So when I get up there, I’m giving it my all and not slacking on them.”

Conyers said Dodge City was going to first look at him in the backfield.

“They are going to start out with me at fullback,” he said. “They want be to come up there about 230 (pounds).”

“We’re very proud that Jermiah is able to continue his career,” Ridgeland head coach Wesley Tankersley said. “He did a lot of different things for us in the last two years since I’ve been here. He probably played the most at defensive line, but also played offensive line before I got here and he played some running back for us this year too.

“I think (fullback) is where he’ll probably end up trying out at Dodge City. He can fullback or H-back and I think that will suit his skill set.”

Conyers said he championship aspirations in mind.

“I’m going to do my best to get them a championship,” he explained. I’ve won one at every level so far and I don’t want to stop now.”

The Conquistadors went 7-4 overall last year and 4-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

He said he has heard good things about the Conquistadors program from his older brother. Jermane Conyers, a 6-3, 330-pound defensive lineman and Ridgeland alum, recently played at Dodge City and signed on with the University of New Mexico in February. He was one of 10 players DCCC who signed four-year letters on intent that same day.

“I think he definitely has some familiarity with the coaching staff there and they’ll have some with him so that will be a positive for him moving forward,” Tankersley said. “It gives him an opportunity in another year or a year-and-ahalf to continue to have some more (football playing) options.”

Conyers said he will miss the Ridgeland community and he plans to major in Business.
