Coahulla Creek’s Carre Welch joins Cheer Cats

Shortly after adding Courtney Blair to next year’s Georgia Northwestern Cheer Cats squad, head coach Karen Stoker went back to Coahulla Creek High School to pick up another soon-to-be Colt alum.

Carre Welch was recently added to the Georgia Northwestern roster, while surrounded by family and friends in a ceremony at the school.

“My signing day is so important to me,” said Welch, who has been a cheerleader since the age of four. “It’s really the beginning of my future and I’m really excited to get started.”

“I’ve never really pictured myself doing anything else but cheering,” she added. “Cheering, stunting and whole competition part of it is just my favorite thing.”

After seeing her in action at tryouts, Stoker said Welch will bring leadership, dedication and athletic ability to the Cheer Cats.

“Her cheer and chants were marked by sharp motions, tight fists and lots of energy,” Stoker said. “Her dance skills are unmatched. Her dance was cute and well-executed with great motions, great flow and great energy and her smile will really draw the crowd’s attention to her and to the dance.”

Stoker said the four jumps Welch performed were “flawless”.

“She received perfect scores on her jumps from both coaches,” the coach continued. “Her form, technique, and height were spot on. Put simply—she nailed every jump.”

Welch, a competition cheerleader since middle school, said she has Level 5 or 6 tumbling skills.

“I’m a good base for stunting and I also can fly,” she said. “Plus, I’m really positive about everything. I’m really outgoing and just ready to have a good time.”

Stoker said Welch’s tumbling skills left the Cheer Cats’ coaching staff “in awe”.

“She executed a toe touch, back handspring and a toe touch, tuck,” Stoker recalled. “For her running tumbling, she completed a roundoff, back handspring, layout with perfect form and technique. It was amazing. She was never out of breath.

“Carre is versatile, as she can be a base or a flyer. That versatility and strength will definitely help our team this season.”

Coahulla Creek cheer coach Marybeth Dent said the college was getting a fantastic cheerleader.

“Carre has been a varsity cheerleader for football, competition, and basketball all four years at Coahulla Creek,” she explained. “She’s an excellent cheerleader and tumbler and has been at the foundation of our program all four years. She’ll bring much experience and leadership to the cheerleading program at GNTC.”

“Georgia Northwestern will get me started on my career really well,” Welch added. “Everything is kind of mapped out and organized for me.”

Welch plans to study sonography.
