Local teams come up short at Dizzy Dean state tournaments

- By Scott Herpst

After a pair of victories in their first two tournament games, the 8-year-old LaFayette Rangers couldn’t keep up the pace at the Dizzy Dean North Georgia Sanctioned State tournament in Gordon County last week.

LaFayette, who opened with wins over the NYO Bulls and Villa Rica, suffered a tough loss to Powder Springs on a scorching day last Monday afternoon before being eliminated by the AYBA Eagles later that evening.

Powder Springs would eventually be put in the elimination bracket, but emerged to make the finals, where they beat the Eastside Thunder to force a winner-take-all game for the championship. The Thunder would rebound to win the game and the title.

At Boynton, four local teams participated in the 6-year-old sanctioned state tournament. However, the Chickamauga Storm, Chickamauga Heat and Rock Spring were all sent packing after losing their first two games.

The host team would pick up a win over the Hobgood Heat, but lost to the Eastside Thunder before falling to Hobgood in a rematch.

Sandy Plains would end up winning the title after Kennesaw forced a winner-take-all game.

Boynton also played host to the 12-yearold sanctioned state tournament, but after an opening round win over Winston, the Bandits would suffer back-toback losses to Acworth and the Canton Stingers to end their tournament.

Acworth would go on to defeat Sandy Springs for the title.

The 10-year-old sanctioned state tournament was claimed by Canton as the host team defeated Sandy Springs in the finals. Trion was eliminated in third place.

Two more sanctioned state tournaments also crowned champions. Canton won the 5-yearold title over Eastside in Canton. The Boynton Titans went 0-2 in the tournament. And at Sharon Springs, Druid Hills took the 13-yearold championship with a win over Sandy Springs Blue.

Rossville City Park played host to the Dizzy Dean North Georgia Invitational State tournament for the 6-year-olds.

The Sharks defeated the Piranhas in an allOregon Park finale. Chattanooga Valley’s Eagles won their opener versus Canton, but lost to the Canton Noles before being eliminated in a loss to the Piranhas.

Other North Georgia state invitational tournament winners included NYO (8-yearolds), Eastside (10-yearolds) and the Buckhead Bombers (12-year-olds).
