Football: Ramblers knock off Warriors

- By Scott Herpst

The LaFayette Middle School Ramblers got off on the right foot to begin the 2017 football season with an 18-8 home victory over Lakeview on Thursday.

After a scoreless first period, Jaylon Ramsey would find the endzone on an 11-yard run. The conversion run failed, but LaFayette had a 6-0 lead less than 90 seconds in the second period.

The score would remain 6-0 through halftime, but all that would change as Ethan Adams returned the second-half kickoff 70 yards for the Rambler score. Another conversion attempt failed.

Lakeview would respond with 3:47 left in the fourth as Chase Rizzo broke free for a 46-yard TD run. A successful two-point attempt would trim the lead down to 12-8.

But the Ramblers would need just 2:21 to put the game on ice as Ramsey’s 14-yard run capped the ensuring scoring drive with 1:26 to play.

Ramsey finished with 101 yards on just nine carries, while Jacob Zwiger hauled in a 29-yard catch. On defense, Adams made 13 solo tackles and assisted on four more. Jacob Moses finished with nine solo stops and added three assists. Zwiger had seven solo tackles and two assists. Austin Tucker had seven tackles and an assist, while Trey Taylor picked off a pass.

Individual statistics for the Warriors were not provided as of press time.

The Ramblers (10) will travel to Dade County next Thursday, while Lakeview (0-1) will be at Ringgold.
