Generals at 3-0 for first time since 2011

- By Scott Herpst

The Heritage Generals scored four touchdowns in a fourminute span of the first quarter and the Navyand-Red came up with six turnovers as they stayed undefeated with an easy 55-12 home victory over outmatched Coahulla Creek on Friday.

Heritage rolled up 456 yards of offense and moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2011. The Generals starters played just over one quarter as a 27-point barrage late in the opening period put the game away.

It began with a nineplay, 83-yard drive that ended when Blake Bryan found Brody Campbell across the middle for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 4:35 left in the quarter.

On the second play of the Colts’ ensuing drive, Heritage defensive back Ryan Carter jumped a route and returned an Austin Martin interception 20 yards for another score. Luke Grant then recovered a loose ball as Coahulla Creek misplayed the kickoff and Grant was rewarded one play later as Bryan hit him for a 21-yard scoring strike with 3:28 to play in the first.

The Colts would go three-and-out and the Generals would strike again with 34 seconds to go in the period. Bryan ran for 19 yards on a keeper, hit Noah Boaz for a 13-yard gain and found Grant on a slant then watched as the senior slipped a tackle and raced 18 yards to the endzone.

After another Colt punt, C.J. Shackleford weaved his way 78 yards for a touchdown run to make it 34-0 less than three minutes into the second quarter and the defense would get into the act once again less than 90 seconds later.

Following a sack that moved the Colts back inside their own 10-yard line, a bad snap bounced into the endzone where Jeffery Curtis fell on it for the fourth defensive TD of the season for the Generals.

The score also signaled the end of the night for the Heritage starters.

Coahulla Creek (0-3) would finally get on the board on a 30-yard pass from Martin to Maddox Adams with 3:05 left in the half and the duo would connect on a 75-yard pass midway through the fourth quarter. The two scoring plays accounted for more than half of the Colts’ 205 total yards of offense.

Heritage would tack on two more scores in the second half. Ethan Bone sidestepped a defender to score on a 16-yard, third-quarter run, one play after he broke off a 59-yard scamper. Then in the closing moments of the game, freshman quarterback Nick Hanson found paydirt on a 10-yard keeper.

Bone led the Generals with 98 yards on five carries as Heritage rushed 32 times for 339 yards. Bryan was a perfect 7-of-7 in the air for 97 yards, while he and Hanson went a combined 11-of-12 for 117 yards to seven different receivers.

Will Besh had an interception off a tipped pass, while Maddox Rose also came up with a fumble recovery. The Generals finished with three sacks, including a solo sack by Pete Padgett.

Heritage will head to Chatsworth this Friday to take on North Murray. A win would match the 2011 squad for the best start in the program’s history.
