Heritage avenges softball loss to East Hamilton
After a seasonopening 8-7 loss at East Hamilton back on Aug. 12, the Heritage Middle School Lady Generals got a measure of revenge on the Lady Hurricanes last Monday night with a 5-1 victory in Boynton.
The non-league game was stopped due to the time limit after the top of the fifth.
Riley Kokinda scored the first run for Heritage in the bottom of the first as she drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home as the throw sailed wide of the bag.
East Hamilton tied things up a half-inning later, but the Lady Generals would regain the advantage in the third. Savannah Wilson singled, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an infield single by Zoe Wright. Wilson would score seconds later on a passed ball.
Heritage broke it open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. A Gracie Dawson single got things going and runners were at first and second after East Hamilton made a throwing error following a bunt by Harper Carstens. A wild pitch would move both runners into scoring position and Jessica Gibson would draw a walk to load the bases.
A high pitch to the backstop would allow Dawson to come sliding home with the Lady Generals’ third run of the game. Moments later, Kokinda would hit a slow chopper back up the middle to bring in the final two runs of the night.
Brinley Horner got the win in the circle, allowing five hits and four walks in five innings. She finished with four strikeouts. Heritage had just four hits on offense.
Details on the Lady Generals game at Trion this past Tuesday were not provided as of press time and this past Thursday’s game with Saddle Ridge was rained out.
Heritage is slated to host Gordon Lee on Tuesday and Dade County on Thursday before a return trip to Chickamauga to face the Lady Trojans on Friday.
