Gordon Lee stays unbeaten in 6-A

- By Scott Herpst

Senior Canaan Burnett had a double, a home run, drove in four runs and struck out 11 batters in six innings as Gordon Lee handled Christian Heritage, 10-2, in a Region 6-A contest between state-ranked teams last Wednesday night in Chickamauga.

The Lady Trojans, who dropped from No. 3 to No. 10 in the ScoreAtlanta Class A Public School poll this past week, despite not having played a game since Aug. 29, struck for two runs in the bottom of the second against the Lady Lions, who came in No. 8 in the Class A Private School polls.

Paxton Grimes tripled to right field and trotted home on Burnett’s two-run bomb to right-center one batter later. Gordon Lee plated two more in the third as Burnett came through with an RBIdouble.

Christian Heritage would get two of the runs back off Burnett in the top of the fourth and the score would remain 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth when the wheels fell off for the visitors from Dalton.

Two straight errors led to a run and Kirbie Bradley knocked in a run with a hit to left. Senior Faith Alexander, making her season debut after off-season shoulder surgery, later ripped a two-run single and Reagan Thompson followed suit with an RBI-hit of her own.

Christian Heritage intentionally walked Gracey Kruse to load the bases, but Grimes would draw a free pass to bring in the 10th run and end the game.

Alexander, who did not play in the field, was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored from her usual leadoff spot in the order. Burnett allowed just four hits in six innings to get the victory in the circle.
