Ramsey’s OT run puts Ramblers at 2-0

- By Scott Herpst

A Jaylon Ramsey 20-yard touchdown run in overtime would provide the margin of victory as the LaFayette Ramblers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 14-8 home win over Chattanooga Valley this past Thursday.

LaFayette opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Quarterback Cade Fisher threw a short pass to Trey Taylor and Taylor did the rest, shaking a defender and pulling away for a 52-yard score. Ramsey hauled in the conversion pass to give the Ramblers an 8-0 lead with 4:57 left in the period.

The score would stay the same until late in the third quarter. A bad snap on a LaFayette punt set up the Eagles at the Rambler 14-yard line and CVMS would score on an Ashton Turner run. Quarterback Jakobe Turner tacked on the conversion, tying things up with less than a minute remaining in the period.

The game would eventually go to overtime and the LaFayette defense, anchored by Ethan Adams, Jacob Moses and Caleb Zwiger, would stop the Eagles on four straight plays.

It would take just one final play as Ramsey took the handoff and got loose around the right side of the field on his way to the endzone for the victory.

Ramsey rushed 19 times for 110 yards, while Fisher threw for 59 yards and rushed for 10 more.

On defense, Ramsey had seven assisted tackle, one solo stop and deflected a pass. Adams picked up six assisted tackles and four unassisted tackles. Moses had three solo stops and assisted on five more, while Zwiger had six total tackles, two unassisted. Individual statistics for the Eagles were not provided as of press time. LaFayette will head south this Thursday to take on the Trion Bulldogs, while Chattanooga Valley (1-1) will host Gordon Lee that same afternoon. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
