Lady Trojans go 4-1 at SCORE Internatio­nal Invitation­al

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans suffered a rare loss at their SCORE Internatio­nal Invitation­al on Saturday, but they bounced back in fine fashion to cap a 4-1 weekend with two impressive victories.

Gordon Lee 6, Coahulla Creek 2

Faith Alexander, Katherine Grace McElhaney and Gracey Kruse each had two hits in the win on Friday afternoon, while Paxton Grimes knocked in two runs. Kruse and Reagan Thompson had one RBI apiece.

Canaan Burnett scattered seven hits over six innings in the win. She struck out six, while both runs she allowed were earned.

Gordon Lee 6, Sonoravill­e 5

The Lady Phoenix looked to rally in their final at-bat, scoring three times before the Lady Trojans were finally able to slam the door on a Friday night win.

Kruse was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Grimes was 3-for-3 with one RBI. Burnett and Emma Minghini also came through with RBIs in the victory.

Minghini got the win, working 4.2 innings. She gave up three hits and finished with three strikeouts. Janie Durham was credited with one-third inning pitched. She allowed two hits, but recorded the save.

Social Circle 5, Gordon Lee 1

The Lady Trojans committed four errors and had just five hits in a Saturday morning setback to the Lady Redskins, ranked No. 10 in Class AA by Score Atlanta.

Alexander was a bright spot on offense, going 2-for-3 and scoring her team’s only run. She also swiped three bases.

Burnett took the loss after pitching just 2.2 innings. She allowed four hits and three runs, though only one was earned, and fanned three. Durham gave up five hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings of work. She finished with one strikeout.

Gordon Lee 5, Wesleyan 1

The Navy-and-White bounced back against Class 1A’s (Private Division) No. 2-ranked team by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Three came home on a homer by Grimes.

Alexander had two more hits and a run, while Thompson knocked in a run.

Burnett threw three innings, allowing an earned run on six hits. She struck out one, but got no decision. Minghini got the win in relief. The freshman pitched 2.2 innings, striking out one and allowing two hits.

Gordon Lee 19, Murray County 0

A seven-run first inning and a 12-run second inning was enough for the Lady Trojans (14-3) to collect the tournament-ending win.

Gordon Lee had 11 total hits. Alexander, Minghini and Kelsey Lee each drove in two runs, while Christin Isbill scored three times in the rout.

Burnett toed the rubber in the first inning, striking out two batters. Durham, who got the win, struck out four and allowed two hits in her two innings of work.
